So I am looking for a new frame and found the stinky 9 at wheelworld.com for 800. Is this a good deal? I was looking at a banshhe scream but I just don't have the cash right now.
The one I rode a few years ago felt really wobbly in the rear end. My buddy who owned it sold it and got a stab primo, the DH bike Kona makes. It felt a lot more solid but also felt heavier. We were riding on DH race type trails though. If you're just looking for a bike with a good amount of travel to jump around on and aren't the anal type about cornering, 800 for a new frame is pretty luring.
It really depends if it's a first year or second year frame. The first year bike had a front der. and Kona had to move the pivot to a terrible place to make room for a front der. So the bike jacked like mad. The second year bike went to a mini-me MRP and the pivot got moved to a more reasonable location. I'd go for a Stinky Primo frame for a hundred more. I had one of those and I loved it.
if i were gonna buy a kona dh bike, id look at the courses i'd be running. if they arent world class norba dh's, a 7" stinky primo will probably be better, with lighter weight and better pedaling. if your going to be running huge super fast dh courses, get a stab primo. the stinky 9 is kind of a bastard bike, its not a real dh bike, but its too dh to be a fr bike. it was only in production for like 2 years, then canceled. id take that as a sign.
yeah i have a friend with the last year production and it has huge pedal jack!! it extends and locks as your cranking. he also has had to replace the plates caust the retarded mounting that kona's had....
that being said i had a stinky 5" and loved it...the 7" ones would be sweet! i would deffinately get the primo or delux instead unless your in for the more travel.
but with a more progressive shock on the rear 7" can feel like 9
the stinky 9's were cracking like mad around the bottom bracket a year or two back. that is a big bad frame, but there might be a reason they don't make them anymore.
for that kind of scratch, you should look at a transition dirtbag. not as much travel, but probably a better bike in 90% of the riding situations you will be in. warning - never ridden one, only heard good things and considered one for myself.
