Stinky long travel upgrades

I searched the archives and found some useful info, but not everything I needed regarding some changes I'm thinking about making to my 2001 Stinky Dee-Lux.

I have the inside line on a betd travel upgrade for cheap, and I emailed Zedros as well for input. But anyway, I was thinking about upgrading the rear travel and then throwing a Boxxer Race on the front.

My question is how slack will I be able to set up the head angle? Slacker the better IMO, because right now the Stinky at the stock 5" and 5" is 70 degrees. I read that the betd kit steepens the head angle a little, but I know the Boxxer would more than compensate. By adjusting sag in the rear and using a tall crown on the fork, I figure I could get max slack angle. Hopefully the set up wouldn't cause too much extra stress on the frame, but I'm willing to take the risk.

I plan on buying a full DH rig next year, but since I've already purchased 3 new bikes in the past 7 months, I'm just going to fiddle around with upgrades rather than sink $4-5K into a new rig. I know about the warrantee voiding and stuff. No biggie.

I agree with Orven here.

Keep the frame like that and add a longer fork that you will use on your next DH bike. Then simply transfer all your parts as well and sell the 2001 Stinky frame.

That's what I would do.

seriously, get a new bike/frame...
Not $4-5K on a new rig? I was thinking a Turner DHR for next year and that would be serious cash. If I'm gonna get a true DH rig, I want to do it right and therefore the $5k pricetag. I was thinking of grabbing a new Bullit with the floating brake and 5th element shock. Still, that's just a long travel freeride machine. Used? nah....too risky with no warrantee.

...unless you have the inside scoop on some incredible deals. My time frame is likely late summer to mid-fall as for when I'll be ready to refine the Stinky or buy a new bike.

first, get the frame of your choice...if you ask me what, it's Nicolai so don't ask me unless you're asking me for an opinion on a frame that you're already planning to buy;) .... buy the frame (used or not..used are ok if you know what to look for)...when you have the frame, things will come together gradually before you even know it... whatever you do though, don't get the Bombshell frame and fork deal...:D

So you and Flipside are both advising against any upgrades to the Stinky? Or Flipside, you're saying upgrade the fork? confused indeed. I'm just really thinking that as much as I like the stiff Z3 QR20 that comes stock on the bike, I'd like to go a bit bigger and stiffer. The springs are right for my weight (152-155 depending on frequency of Krispy Kreme visits) and I put a custom mix of oil that is just a little thicker than the stock 7.5 weight, but I do bottom that fork out a good bit. The rear is set up for a linear rate of travel resistance, and I could set it for more progressive I guess, but I imagine I'd still hear the clunk of bottoming out fairly often. I think for what I want to do, 5" and 5" is just too XC for me. (I know - This from me - a guy who shaves and has a sub 22lb hardtail  )

I say don't do it. I upgraded my 2000 Stinky this way, and got sick of running high spring rates (which overpowered the damping) due to the resulting high leverage ratio. Search on Pinkbike's pictures section for Toshi and you'll find some pics of it. (I sold it to truthrdr on this board, who only has posted once to my knowledge -- to try to sell the bike ;) .)

I have a 5" stinky and I've been considering a travel upgrade also. The general consensus that I've reached is that the stock shock is valved specifically for the 2:1 leverage ratio of the stock rocker. If you keep the stock shock and get the new linkage plates two things will happen: you'll need a heavier spring to compensate for the increased leverage ratio, and your bike will lose some of the plushness because of the valving. Also, the increased leverage ratio may turn the Fox into a ticking time bomb in terms of blown seals. The Stinky is overbuilt, so I'd be pretty surprised if long travel linkage plates actually cause much in the way of frame failures. StinkyKonaGuy has the pimpest hopped-up Stinky I've ever seen, and he's running an Avalanche rear shock that's custom valved for the application. I think the direction my bike is headed is to get a Romic 2.25" stroke shock, keep the stock linkage, and get a 6" travel double crown fork. I'm in firm believer in quality over quantity. The Romic and also the Avalanche would give ya 5.5" in the rear. I've only seen a couple Stinky's with Avalanches, and none with Romic's or 5th Elements. I'm considering the Romic because cost is a huge issue for me, and this upgrade is still a ways down the road. Anyone else have experience with aftermarket shocks on Stinky's? I think this may call for a new thread...

No, it isn't. It's a fun rig to toss about on the trails, tho.

El Jefe, say you cracked the frame, couldn't you put the original fork/rear shock on and say, idk what happened, can you replace it?

Dude, this post is several years old. Look at the posting dates before you respond.
