I've never seen anyone do their nails and talk on the cell phone while going 20 over in a construction zone. It's pretty impressive. :D

Gee, I wonder how a careful driver like that managed to do that to their car?

bv wins the thread! good eye.

she also dropped down 4 lanes of traffic to pass on the right instead of, doing like most law breakers do, move over LEFT 1 lane into the hov lane and pass.

I'd like to see a study that correlates the increased traffic deaths of cyclists with the increased use of cell phones by drivers. It's crazy that hands free devices aren't required by law in cars.

It's not the phone in the hands that causes the most trouble - it's the fact that a driver on the phone is paying precious little attention to driving.

Yup. I wish cell phones would be banned all together. Not just in cars.

So what you are saying is..... "Cell phones don't kill people, people kill people"?

Floating down the Hudson
Rob and I were out for a nice dinner one evening on the second floor of a restaurant that overlooked a stop light. A chick pulls up, reaches in her bag, dispenses some sort of lotion and procedes to stick her hand down the front of her pants....

Check please!

Phones while driving, hands free or otherwise, are bad. There have been a lot of studies in Oregon that show it's not the phone, but the conversation on the phone that cause problems.

I hate cell phones and have one only because I have been asked to carry one. It is a handy device at times, but I don't use it while driving.

cell phones can be an invaluable tool but I operate under the philosophy of “just because I can get a call anywhere at any time, doesn’t mean I should answer it.”

Well, I drive and talk on the phone all the time, and dont see stopping with that any time soon. Sucks some people cant drive with or w/out them. Be careful.

Precisely my point. :thumb: And I think it's not just studies in Oregon. I'm pretty sure a lot of independent studies have reached a very similar conclusion.

As long as you're doing it in situations where you don't need to make any split-second driving situations, you'll probably be fine.

sweet! i actually had to do 80/85 to catch up and pass on the right. I did however put the camera down, ease off of the gas pedal and return to safe driving mode. the madness had to be documented.

I mean really, I can see how its a distraction, but not any more than eating something or talking to the person next to you in the car. If its the conversation after all.

How are you supposed to know exactly when you're going to have to make a split-second decision?

[Whoops, hang on there, Mr. Tractor trailer who's cutting in front of me at 75 mph...I gotta put my phone down first!

Sorry but if you cant drive and talk on a phone, you probably cant walk and chew gum either. It's really NOT that difficult.

Oh, Sh!t! You took that picture? Ha! So there were like a gazillion driving hazards going on at once then....Did you look over your left shoulder to see if someone was taking a picture of you going 85mph, eyes off the road, taking a picture of someone chatting on her phone? ;) :thumb:

Burley, you are giving the majority of the driving public way too much credit. Like it or not, phones are a distraction, especially fiddling with them to make or answer a call, and some people are not capable of dealing with it while driving.

People just don't take driving seriously enough. I want them focused on the road, especially when I'm out on my bike.

That's like saying "I can't see why people can't drive after a 6 beer lunch. It's not that hard, you just use the curb as a guide..."

My guess is you drive just as bad as everyone else that drives while talking on the phone. You just haven't killed anyone yet.

Please explain to me how talking on a hands free device is any different than talking to someone sitting next to you.

Bingo.

Talking on the phone just isn't a good idea when driving.

Hell, I can't even listen to my wife when I'm in heavy traffic at speed. I just don't hear her.

That's fine and dandy, but does that mean you're against car radios? How about food, drinks, etc?
Listening to radios is a passive activity. It's easy to tune it out. Having a conversation in the car is very similar to talking on the phone - both are interactive. I'd bet that they're very similar when you compare the level of distraction to the driver.

I just think it's really funny, the battles you people pick to fight sometimes (my Bikemag thread notwithstanding).

I mean, speeding causes more accidents and deaths every year, why dont we have threads about how speeding is bad? Where are all the threads about people who "Should be wearing seatbelts"?

It's either SUV's or Cellphones everyday with you people because you're so trendy it's disgusting.

I'll bet most of those speeding accidents involve distracted people.

You're against talking to the passenger in the car? Awesome.
