Please explain to me how talking on a hands free device is any different than talking to someone sitting next to you.
I don't know that there have been any studies about that. I know it can be nearly as bad based on Oregon laws for minor drivers. If you are under 18 and have been driving less than a year, I think there is a 1 passenger limit. This is because of the number of multiple fatal crashes by teen drivers.

The radio is a little different, but again, I think there is little or no data on it. What there is data on is phones and crashes. The last study in Oregon showed no difference between hand held vs. hands free conversations.

There is no law against phones while driving, but there is an additional fine if you are on the phone when caught speeding, unbuckled, careless, or whatever.

You guys just want laws to control every facet of everyone's lives, dont you?

You just want to be protected from the big bad world outside. Leash laws strictly enforced, no cell phones, big WET FLOOR signs anywhere that's been mopped in the past 72 hours.

This thread is the definition of America.

Sorry but if you cant drive and talk on a phone, you probably cant walk and chew gum either. It's really NOT that difficult.
I can't :o: I tired and promptly pulled over.....to scary.

Way more involved than eating fries and a shake. :) Now trying to eat a spagetti dinner while driving...yes that would be distracting, like talking on/answering/dialing a cell phone ;)

That is OK. I personally find them distracting.

No - I'd like people to quit thinking their brains are special and not subject to the biological processes involved with human thought.

IOW - I'd like people to stop being retarded. I know it's probably not going to happen, but a guy can hope, eh? :D

no, i'm actually a libertarian more or less. loathe the patriot act, want to emigrate to new zealand (but not australia since they're in the u.s.'s pocket), etc.

however, i think the capability of the public for general ass-hattery is underestimated, and since the officers of the law don't have the ability to arrest people for being idiots* laws such as these are the next best thing.

* before you get all bent out of shape, being idiots here means driving like an idiot, not protesting gwb or the wto or whatever (with which i have no problem). and yes, it's up to ME whether a particular practice is idiotic, just 'cause i said so. so there.

So what does that mean about the rest of the world since most countries ban the use of phones?

Wow. That sure doesnt look like MOST of the countries in the world to me. Do you know how many countries there are?

And let me ask you: Did you bother to read the fine print?

This page lists those countries that have banned the use of a cell phone when driving unless used with some form of hands-free kit.
Again, I say, what is with you folks and the trendy causes?

That is pure gold.

Cell phones distract people who should be focused on the road, pure and simple. Are they worse than other distractions? I don't know, but the cumulative effect of doing lots of things while driving is bad, and that fact that it might not be as bad as another bad thing doesn't make it good. Do I want a law against it? No, I just want less of it.

There are tons of drivers already messing with their ipods, eating happy meals, checking their hair, getting directions on their GPS (because they don't know where they are!), yelling at their kids, petting their (unleashed) pets, watching DVDs, all while they scream down the road at Mach 10 weaving through traffic without using signals (can't do that when your hands are busy!!) and otherwise being menaces to themselves and the people around them. They don't need to be on the phone too. And neither do you. I hope you don't learn the hard way.

in practice i probably wouldn't like any of the laws, but if i were allowed to put the legal hurt on people i saw doing insanely stupid things on the road then i'd be all in favor of it. maybe i should make like peter griffin and start my own country...

There have, though I don't have the citations handy.

To answer Burley's question, there are big differences between the headset and talking to someone in the car. For one, the person in the car is aware of the road conditions and will adapt the conversation accordingly. Also, when talking to someone elsewhere not aware of your surroundings, people psychologically put themselves in a different place (one study called it virtual intermediate space or something similar) because the conversation must continue to be successful regardless of local conditions. This is also why it's different from eating or adjusting the radio. You don't feel as compelled to fiddle with those things when conditions get dangerous and you have to drive carefully.

That said, I use a headset and have only had a couple near misses. :) I'm ambivalent about outlawing it completely as I'm going into medicine and I'd hate to think that I couldn't give a two second instruction while travelling that could save someone's life.
