So last night in seattle we had this gnarly lightning storm. i was adjusting the suspension on my car and took it out for a test around 9:00. saw major lightining over in the moutains, so i decided to drive out and get an up close look. went up i90 till the storm was to my left, and continued following closer and closer down county roads. to get to the point, after an hour of chasing, i was right in the freakin middle of the lighning on this mountain road to nowhere (this is in my convertible, so i was looking up at the open sky) lightning bols were striking all around my car (closest one at this point was prolly 1000 feet) It was in all directions any way i looked, there were big blue bolts. you could look up, and see bolts traversing the clouds overhead, it was nuts. when the bolts strike, seein it that close up, they are made of tons of tiny little bolts, and after they hit, they leave this plasmalike residue in the sky the sape of the bolt, that "floats up" and away. so i decided to take a side road that went up to the top of a hill. this gave me a great 360 degree veiw with no trees, so you could see where it was hitting the ground. (btw, im scared outa my mind at this point) i was prolly goin 10 miles an hour. It started to rain, so i headed back the way i came, and started raining more, and i was now following the storm back home. then all of a sudden all hell broke loose. it started absoluty POURING. felt like someone was soaking me with a high volume low presure hose, so i pulled over top put the top up. and thats when the lighning really starded to hit. i was all around, no more that 500 feet away. i could feel the clap pond in my chest, and the while trying to get the top up and get the hell outta there. i wasnt entierly sure i wasnt going to get hit, standing on the ground and being soaking wet. so i got the top up and drove home FAST, and was under the effin storm all the way home. i was no longer keen on being in that situation, being cold wet, and i couldnt see the sky with the top up. got home, the power was out and there was tree debris all over the place. i was pretty glad to get home (this was at 1:30 am)
but what a cool thing it was in retrospect. if felt like armageddon. just thought id share, and see who else has storm stories
