Bush Plans to Send Americans to Moon, on to Mars
Is there oil up there or something?
Nothing like election year promises.

I think you're right Loop....I think I even made the same tired o;d joke....actually tired old jokes are the only ones I've got. Anyway speaking of tired old jokes, how are ya Loopie?Originally posted by LordOpie

Didn't this get reported a month or two ago and we discussed it or am i having deja vu?
haha, Westy gets no respect, you just blantantly hi-jacked the thread and pissed on his boots at the same time.Originally posted by valve bouncer

All is fair, I do my best to hijack other people threads although I usually fail.Originally posted by LordOpie

Haven't something like half of all unmanned expeditions to Mars resulted in failure? And the last I heard, none of them ever returned to Earth (unless I'm wrong).
That is my understanding as well. They'll have to develop that technology, which will include having to figure out a way to land all that extra fuel on Mars for a relaunch. Did you see how they landed that rover? BOUNCE BOUNCE BOUNCE. Let's see them do that with all that fuel.Originally posted by LordOpie

Loopie, is it true that with your rather impressive girth you have your own gravity? .........mmmmm journey to Mars, wonder what studio they're gonna do it in?Originally posted by LordOpie
what's the gravity like on Mars? I'm sure it has to be much closer to earth than the moon. So, good point IAB.

Has a shuttle ever tried to make it to Mars? I didnt know we had ever tried it.Originally posted by I Are Baboon

I'm all in favor of space exploration, but this is quite ambitious of the Bush campaign. Let's get an unmanned ship to land on Mars and safely return before sending people there.
I don't think so, in fact, i think all missions not to the moon have simply orbited earth.Originally posted by golgiaparatus

Moon base! Bout frikkin time. tarts whistling Star Trek Theme:
We were able to land on the moon and subequently return to Earth because we could land a fuel powered vehicle there, due to the low gravity. With Mars however, we have essentially crash landed every unmanned vessel we've sent there. I can't imagine we'll be able to crash land a manned vessel loaded with hundreds of tons of extra fuel. It'll be interesting to see how they do that, you know, like 45 years from now. Hope I'm alive for it.Originally posted by LordOpie

If I'm wrong cool, if not, before going to Mars, we should send a shuttle half way just to start testing the idea. I think part of the problem, as IAB pointed out, is fuel. If a shuttle's in geo-stationary orbit, it's not burning fuel, am I correct? When going to Mars, would they just need one burn to cover most of the distance or some sort of constant burn?
Shuttle missions are low earth orbit, as far as I know. Usually a lot of the shuttle's cargo capacity is being used, so it really doesn't have room for the extra fuel needed to bump it higher.Originally posted by LordOpie

Good ol' Newton.......Originally posted by Silver
On the way to the moon, you don't need a constant burn, you just need enough to get you away from the earth's gravity influence. No friction in space, so once you're on the way, you're good to go.

I work with a gentleman who is in his 50s and is quite a Republican. I was bitching about Bush spending like a drunken sailor, and my colleague remarked that it was better than Clinton.
I had to pull up numbers from the CBO before he would believe that we have actually had a budget surplus.
All the required rocket fuel would drain all the H2 we need for the hydrogen fueled economy we are building.BurlyShirley said:Gas prices too high to afford the trip.
