Stratos oil change

I have a Superstar 6 which of course the fork manual never even mentions. To add ATF do I just turn the preload adjusters full counterclockwise by hand until they stop and then use a wrench to actually remove them from the stanchion tubes. Thats what it appears to say in the manual but its kind of unclear. It also says to loosen the crown bolts. Why is this necessary? Is the tolerance so tight that they have to be loose to pull the internals out? Is it easier to fill from the bottom since I will have to remove those bolts anyway to drain the old ATF? I have a syringe that will make getting ATF in the small hole easier, so thats not a problem.

EDIT: It looks like it would also be safe to assume the oil levels should be the same as the MX6/S8(230,270,300)???

As usual, any help greatly appreciated.

I dont know about the levels, but ive serviced a couple of s8 and s7 forks, and let me tell ya ATF sucks...
Any moto fork oil will make your fork smoother, with less "cavitacion" (i dont know how you say that in english, but its certainly not cavities...), beeing cavitacion that strange feeling that some oil is missing on the rebound cartridge..

w10 on compression
w5 on rebound

Maxima, Elf, any fork oil will do

Well, I've messed around with my S7 this summer and what we've done (two other guys at the shop I work at have S8 forks):

- is loosen the top crown bolts
- loosen the top caps until they're unthreaded
- compress the fork so the internals stick out
- pour the oil in through the top (of course with the fork lower bolts done up)

I think putting oil through the top is a bit faster than the bottom. Plus, I've been chainging oil and experimenting with oil levels with the fork still on my bike It's your call. As for oil heights, I'm pretty sure you can go along with the MX6 levels. In the end, you'll find out if it's enough or not so then it's just a matter of adding or taking out by 10ml at a time.

As for oil weights, I put 5w in the compression and 15w in the rebound and I'm not saying this is right...I'm just playing around to see what it does. My springs are fairly soft so I don't need a lot of compression damping. Good luck.
