I have a stratos S7 fork and I'm trying to mount a 6" Avid disc brake to it. The problem I am having is the offset made by the hub(Ritchey 20mm) makes it so the caliper can't be fully tightened to the fork. Is it safe to use shims?

I'll try to put up soem pictures.

As you can see, The rotor is already touching the outside of the caliper housing, meaning that the inside pad is at the furthest out setting. All this and the bolts that hold the caliper to the fork aren't tightened down.

Is it safe to shim it?

well if hopes are done that way it must be okay :D

I've got a handfull of small washers shimming my caliper out on a super t, I've heared that the right way to do it is to purchase a Hayes adaptor for a marzocchi qr20 system and the avid caliper will bolt right on, I think the hayes adaptors are all for 8" rotors though.

The problem you are having is that the adaptor for the caliper is different on 20mm and QR wheels, being thiker on the 20mm. you could use washers/spacers but the best way would be to do what the guy above said and get a hayes (dont think avid do one) caliper adaptor for 20mm axled wheels, these come in 6" or 8" types so you could get a bigger disc at the same time, they do still allow you to use the Avid positioning system (CPS?) though which is good.

Wow, thanks for your reply Shanks. That is the last thing I needed to hear to get my fork running perfect.

For the price I got the S7 fork, there really was no other option. If I were to go buy a new fork, a stratos would be at the bottom of my list due to the high price.

A couple of options:
Avid and Hayes adapters=the same size. Avid designed them this way so that they would be compatible w/ 74mm Manitou post mounts. I believe that Hayes makes a 6' adapter for 20mm forks so the dirtjumpers and park riders aren't forced to go 8".
Spacers should be fine.
Or, you could get the 20mm Hayes adapter and an 8" rotor for the fork.

Yes. Been there done that, blew the seals, bent the stanions, twisted it too many times, finialy caved and sold the POS! and got the best handmade fork ever the '98 super T.

Dont get me wrong there are certainly worse forks to have *cough* zzyzx, hannabrink but an S7 has the worst damping and its heavy, and the S8 is a 3 floors high!

If you ask me there is only 1 fork out there that has good damping, weight is lowish, and is stiff and its the dorado.
