I have a ride buddy who has trouble keeping the headtube of his hardtail frames attached to the body of the bikes he rides. Any wreckermendations on a tough ass (preferably steel for repairability) HT frame that won't shirk at being mounted by a 240 pound hard-as-nails hell-for-leather style rider (and at a price you can't refuse, the uglier the better)?

It would help if you listed all the hardtails he has broken so far. There are many burly bikes out there, is he breaking real bikes. Help us help you.

Easily the Imperial. Whether the geometry suits is another issue b/c it's a little non-traditional but the strength is all there.

Last victim was an '04? Azonic DS. Previous carnage included multiple Kona Stinkys.
The Azonic DS's are fairly lightweight and not the burliest hardtail frames to hang a big tripleclamp fork on. Especially since they don't have a big gusset on the front.
Look for a frame with a longer head tube and a large reinforcing gusset. He won't break that.
There's no way this head tube will break off

Revell chromo. 24" 250 or 26" 450. Ultimate dirt jumper. Tough as nails. 5 lbs. and only $450. $100 more for a custom.

Another vote for the Imperial.

It's all well and good to say that your frame weighs 10lbs and will never break, but isn't it better to say that your frame weighs 6lbs and will never break? 6 lbs of engineered strength, not random gussets and overly thick tubing.

Seat tube angle & length is odd though, and whether or not it will suit you is another issue. If it WILL suit you, then go for it.

fwiw, lots of people have problems keeping azonic hardtails in one piece. it's not a bad frame, just a lightweight one.
the imp is probably the way to go if he's willing to drop the coin on it. otherwise, the 243 will do nicely. $410 at unreal cycles.

Imperial.

One of the few frames mentioned that has had competent structural analysis performed on it during its design to my knowledge.

Imperial if it fits, very tough bike. I also think the Sinister Ridge is nice but I have heard of some problems over at Sinister recently.

Your friend might want to check out the upcoming Evil DOC as well. It's supposed to be a burly frame with clean, simple lines. Can be be set up with many different ways too.

The Imp is a safe bet though. Check out the nicolais (BMXTB, MTXTB) as well.

Personally, I would avoid Sinister until they come out with some straight answers on what's going on. AFAIK, up to this point the most reliable answers have been "I heard from a former employee..." and "A friend who lives near them told me..."

Search on BMX forums, those guys do crazy high drops to flat concrete and don't taco, bend, or break anything, sure the bike will weigh 45 lbs and be too small to ride on epics but it won't break.

as pictured above mine weighs in at 34lbs....the frame by itself was just under 8 lbs....I ride a large. I had a meduim last year but it was to small for the long rides. The large is perfect for all around riding. I'm 5'9" and it fits me perfect....D
