so i found myself randomly browsing nancy pelosi's webpage (as i'm want to do), and found this curious quote
GLOBAL WARMING

The technological advances that will achieve energy independence also will help us address the most urgent environmental issue facing us today: global warming. For the sake of our future generations, America must provide strong leadership to reduce emissions that are responsible for global warming. Instead, we have walked away from international efforts to help reduce this growing danger to the planet.

We will develop ground-breaking technology and policies that harness the creativity and flexibility of the free market to reverse the dangerous warming trends. Increased use of renewable energy sources, including biofuels, and energy efficiency will help reduce emissions, protecting future generations from this global threat.

anything seem out of sorts?

i was thinking more of "For the sake of our future generations, America must provide strong leadership to reduce emissions that are responsible for global warming."

since she's the top dog in the House, how exactly is she doing in the realm of "leadership by example"? (hint: google news "pelosi")

Oh, you mean the whole "I'm gonna fly in the biggest dern jet I can get my hands on" thing?
i guess size only matters if you don't have a penis, just like implementing "good" solutions to thorny issues are to be accepted at face-value, however economically intractable they may be for most of the population (who are only able to operate in the near term).

from this angle, it's tangent to chang's thread of climate change: cost & benefits

murtha has chimed in on this, apparently influenced by an episode or 2 of the sapranos: SFgate.com
Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., the Pelosi ally who chairs the House military appropriations subcommittee, said he has spoken to Pentagon officials about the need to provide Pelosi with a bigger plane that can fly passengers coast to coast in comfort.

But he denied pressuring the Pentagon. “I don’t need to pressure them. I just tell them what they need to do,” Murtha said. ...

Murtha said he is convinced the Pentagon has been leaking information about the possibility that Pelosi would use large military planes to make her look bad. But he said, ”They’re making a mistake when they leak it because she decides on allocations for them,” referring to the Pentagon budget.
"nice budget you got there. hate for anything to happen to it"

Not having time to read the details, this is the same attack used on Gore, which really is a red herring. If a tool amplifies your power and influence to enact change that offsets the detriment of the tool, you use it.

Another case of can't argue the message so we'll attack the messenger.

ummm...you haven't read the details, yet know this is same attack used on gore?

what, exactly, do you understand "the message" to be?

What's your point, tinkle? Politicians are scum? Really? Who knew?
i agree, and if i can correctly surmise by your comment, i'm glad to read you've turned a corner & put an end to any partisan demagoguery (as found in a half-dozen or so of your posts in the past few weeks).

No corner needs to be turned.

I generally end up bashing the political party in charge. This just happens to be the GOP right now - and there is plenty to bash. I make no distinction between these two groups of thieves. I can't believe that others (both D & R) see politicians as two very distinct groups - one beyond EVIL, and the other GODLY.

Politicians are the same. They've done an excellent job of pitting half of the population against the other half. Isn't that their job in reality?

this could all be solved if those smelly, brown, illegal immigrant (you know they are), breeding machines would quit bathing their kids in the very same pool they take a dump in (instead of cleaning it), then maybe i could make my tee time with my business connections instead of going to the home depot pkg lot to get another groundsman.

try to see both sides of this.

missed this the first time around, just like you may have missed the results of the mid-term elections first time around.

What does that have to do with my post?

I read that even if you harvested all of the US to make Biofuel, there would still not be enough to even keep up with expanding demand on top of your current gasoline imports. Don't know how true it is, but I think it was in a broadsheet.

We need a genuine breakthrough technology to solve this problem. A new way to manufacture / harvest hydrogen on a massive scale would be great.

The trouble is that hydrogen is only useful as a good way to store energy, creating the energy is the big problem, and hydrogen is the answer to a different question.

wicked good show.

but to chang's point we need a technology solution: there would also have to be some sort of personal accountability. we're a nation (or western culture if you like) of corpulent, entitled cry babies. hate for another 9/11 or 7/7 to motivate us, but it just may take that.

There's a sh1tbucket of hydrogen just floating around in space... Not feasible as a source now, but with a few space elevators...

"how can you be pro-environment and anti-emissions when you fly a private jet all over the country/world?"

how'd I do?

edit: the message is that investment in alternative energy and efficiencies will provide us the two-fold benefits of energy independence and reduced greenhouse emmissions (I'd like to add the three-fold addition of will keep us technologically and industrially competitive).

"For the sake of our future generations, America must provide strong leadership......"
I know whenever I hear those words the statement that follows will almost certainly be bland platitudes mixed with bullsh*t. *Sigh*
