In my youth we always called them the Future Fascists of America. Today not much has changed, total Homophobia, just your basic racism against the minority du jour ( used to be Jews, People of color, etc)

http://www.cnn.com/2014/04/21/us/washington-boy-scouts-revoke-charter-gay-scoutmaster/index.html?hpt=hp_t2

And I will be the first to admit it that this is a stand and a policy that a church has taken that I agree with

The Boy Scouts of America has revoked the charter of a Seattle church that refused to fire its pack's gay scoutmaster, according to a letter written by the organization's general counsel and provided to CNN by the church.
Pack and Troop 98 is composed of about 15 boys, and according to attorney Steven McGowan's letter, they will have an opportunity to transfer to another troop.
"As you are aware the policy of the Boy Scouts of America does not allow open or avowed homosexuals to serve as volunteer adult leaders," read McGowan's letter to an attorney representing Rainier Beach United Methodist Church.
The church received its charter in November and hired Geoff McGrath, a 49-year-old Eagle Scout, to lead the troop. The Rev. Monica Corsaro said she knew McGrath was gay, and she wasn't trying to make any political statement by hiring him.
"We were not hiding," she said. "We are talking about real people that are being effected by a policy of discrimination ... by a policy that BSA teaches, so we are just calling it out."

Plus, they sell POPCORN. Who the hell goes to the store and thinks: "Wow, I sure could use some popcorn, maybe put it in the freezer for when I suddenly get a peckish, or put a bag in my camelback for a ride"? WTF? Girl Scouts have this **** all figured out.

You're just pissed you never got an invitation into the special tent on camp outs.
I went to one meeting only in 8th grade. Some friends were in it and asked me to come along. They were planning a 3 day two night back pack trip. The Scoutmaster passed out the mandatory gear list. The quality of the gear was crap and the weight was ridiculous. 35 pounds of gear each not including food, My gear, cook wear, water filter, down bag, ensolite pad, tent, first aid kit, rain wear and pack was 15 pounds. I left and never went back. Plus who wanted to be in an all male group? I was going packing with some nice looking girlfriends.

My general take on most scouts is that they are either little mommas boys or they resemble Neidermeyer from Animal House and need to be shot by their own troops

and they produce morons like these

In hell. Welcome!
Whenever I see kids in uniforms being organized on behalf of some ideology, regardless of country or regime, I see these things: brainwashing, assholes seeking power through preying on kids and their parents, diddlers.

I grew up in this bull**** on the wrong side of the curtain.

I was a Scout for a couple years. Kept waiting to do something cool. Camp outs were fun, shooting guns and canoeing etc. at summer camp was fun, but being coerced/forced into thestupid **** like the dorky uniforms and other idiocy was not. Left after I discovered girls and serious goofing off. REALLY glad my sons are not interested...we can go hiking and camping on our own, and the skills I can teach are much more applicable to the real world...

Just like anything else in life, your experience may vary. Mine was more like jK's. I never made it to Eagle Scout, but I had a blast goofing off with my buddies.

Scouts was okay when I was in my single digit years. After discovering girls and realizing I could do all the outdoorsy stuff on my own without having to attend stupid meetings and/or selling popcorn I was done with scouts. Almost got talked back into it during my middle teen years, but much like Eric, I picked up a little bit of a "fascist" vibe that I didn't like. Though to be fair, that might have just been the guy who was the leader at the time. He was a HUGE Rush Limbaugh fan.

yea, i recognize my experience was atypical. my troop had a very laid back vibe thankfully.

that being said, i'm pretty disgusted with the sh*t that's going on.

We used to hang out at the local river doing stupid **** like jumping off the RR bridge, having roman candle wars, plinking with our .22s and shooting the rapids on inner tubes. Just a bunch of feral idiots killing summer afternoons in the pre-puberty years.

Then the scouts would come down the river in their canoes, smothered in their lifejackets and verbally assaulted by safety tips from the leaders as they picked their way through the rocks like it was a minefield.

The scouts looked at us with envy, the leaders like we were infidels and we just pointed and laughed.

i'm still in touch with a number of the guys from my troop that made it to eagle. all are doing well and haven't turned douchey.

somewhat ironically, one of them came out as gay once he was in college. he's now "married" (his state doesn't recognize it. yet). he and his partner just adopted a son and are doing very well for themselves. he's also very involved in LGBT rights. edit: he's not the in your face kind. he's just a normal dude that happens to like dudes.

My sons Godfather is an Eagle Scout...he recently left his wife of 20+ years for one of his daughters friends that he hooked up with while hanging out at the strip club she worked at. Turned his back on 3 of the coolest kids I have ever known, and an awesomely cool and gorgeous, hard working wife. Not to mention my son.

I was a good neighbor and bought popcorn from the kid across the street. It sucked.

I'm not allowed to buy girl scout cookies until they stop using palm oil because I am a hippie. But the cookies are awesome, stale popcorn is not awesome.

I'm with Krankypants here, spent years in the scouts and got my eagle badge.

Every troop is different but it seems that many of the SF area troops are very different (my council includes both Oakland and Berkley)

I experienced activities that I would have never gotten into and it changed my life for the better. I grew up in the suburbs in a family that was not the camping/hiking/adventuring type so without the scouts I would have probably never developed the love for nature and outdoor recreation that I have now.

I worked for the BSA for almost 10 years during the summers at a camp (insert this one time at boyscout camp joke here) and one of my best friends is a scout executive.

That said, I HATE the religious/nationalistic aspect of the organization. I have been wearing this badge on my uniform since I was old enough to be aware of the discriminatory policies.

But!

The scouts are turning it around. They have allowed gay scouts to participate and are pretty much running a "don't ask don't tell" policy for the leaders. This change cost them huge amounts of money from religious organizations that have supported them in the past (mostly in the south) but they went ahead any way.

Within 5 years I predict that gay leaders will be allowed.
