That said, there IS a huge availabilty of handguns to criminals here because of the easy availability of guns purchased legally, and I think that should be made more difficult...this gives some gun people apoplexy, but it doesn't much bother me.
Handgun laws in Virginia, as most states, are a joke. We have large threatening signs on the interstate threatening jailtime for illegal guns but you have to go out of your way to make a gun illegal. Anyone can get their hands on one with no problems, if you are a convicted criminal or don't want to wait 7 days just bypass the gun store and buy one off of Craigslist or from a gun show. There is permit required to conceal but it is about as difficult to get as a dog license.
I like the way NY state does it. You need a permit to own, and each weapon (handgun only) must be registered to an individual. The permits are not that easy to get. There are certainly a large supply of illegal guns available but they most certainly originate from out of state.
This is nauseating. My brother graduated from Tech and I helped him move into Ambler-Johnston(dorm scene of first shootings) when he was a freshman and was there in Norris(scene of the rest of the shootings) to see him get his diploma before proceeding to Lane Stadium for commencement. I was accepted to Tech and would have gone there but for the fact that Radford(15 minutes away) gave me a much better scholarship(full ride). I lived there for years and graduated from Radford but spent all my social time at Tech because our fraternity had a great chapter there and Radford didn't even have a colony then(though it now has a chapter). I often fish the New River and go to at least one Hokies football game each year and had I been able to find decent-paying work after graduation, would still live there today. I really wanted to drive down for the vigil but my family here needs me more.
I'm sure I probably don't know anyone who was directly involved in this tragedy because I graduated 10 years ago but just the same, I can't get the queasy feeling to go away. All the fun times I had there both on-campus and off have been windmilling past my mind's eye since hearing about this after work yesterday: watching Mike Vick throw rainbow TDs in Lane...tailgating all day with my buds...scarfing hot wings at Sharkey's...fishing while tubing the New...downing pitchers at The Balcony/Top o' the Stairs... smacking golf balls at Cox's...reggae shows at South Main Cafe...darts tourneys at The Underground...keggers at the Ranch House...biking on Brush Mountain...even shooting my guns at the Army Corps of Engineers range across from Pandapas Pond. Geez, I'd bet that nut probably test fired his weapons there because it's free and but a short drive up 460W from campus. [shudders]

You are misinformed, Westy. As a citizen of the Commonwealth for over 25 years and one who acutally tried to get a concealed carry permit, I can tell you it ain't as easy as you think. You have to get fingerprinted by the cops, have a local police chief/sherriff write you a letter of recommendation, attend a training seminar, pay the various fees, etc. It was so much of a hassle I just said forget it halfway through the process.
Gun show purchases are also subject to NFA rules...they just bring the gun store to your community as a convenience. While living in Radford, I bought a .45 at the Salem Gun Show and they made me pick it up a couple days later at the store 30 minutes away.
I wish some politician would propose legislation to ban mental illness and antisocial behavior so we could all sleep safely at night. If not for our own safety why can't we pull together and do it for the children?

I would guess the person you bought the gun from was probably just doing a little CYA, or maybe a licensed dealer. I'm not sure if regulations still apply to them in gun show situations. From the reasearch I did when moving with guns into the state showed that private sales required no checks or waiting, cash and carry. Found a little supporting evidence here, although my original source was a little more official.

I bought the gun from a licensed dealed and even tried to become one myself many years ago. Needless to say, a memorable call from the local FBI field office dissuaded me.
Private sales among intrastate non-licensed individuals are permissable but you have to photocopy the signed bill of sale and their state drivers license first in case it is ever used in a crime. I bought a Mini-14 in this fashion and had no problem providing the seller with that insurance policy as I would demand no less myself.
If you want to know about gun laws, why would you choose the source least knowledgeable on them? Brady, ferchrissakes?!?! I am now clicking a stopwatch to see exactly how long it takes Sarah, Diane, Charles, Henry and the rest of the opportunistic swine to propose their next useless gun control initiative. The first fistful of dirt will scarcely hit the coffin lid, I'll wager.

I only used the Brady site as the easiest source of info to confirm what I had found when researching for more official information. I know it is a politically driven source but I would trust the information provided.
I talked to my friend who got a Va conceal permit. He said it was very easy to get but he had a permit from NY so they might have reciprocated the license and forgone some of the requirements.

Well, to be fair, I am an impatient person by nature and easily frustrated by bureaucracies. Also, though long-since expunged, having a nolo contendre for carrying a Glock 10mm while fishing with a satchel on my back containing an aquapipe and assorted varieties of hashish and KB probably did not help my cause.
