Suggestions for DH brake pads

There's a company called hayes that makes pads that work really well with hayes brakes. As a matter of fact, they seem to work the best.

I got to see a brand new pair of kool stop pads break out of a caliper yesterday upon their first stop in the parking lot at a trailhead. The mount wire thingies went into pieces.

Well I am looking for upgrades, because my hayes pads that came with my Hayes brakes don't work to my liking. I want something nasty kinda like what we use in auto racing called carbon metallic.
Thanks

Depending on which Hayes you have determines which compound you have. Mags come with sintered metallic and I think the cheaper HFX-9's come with semi metallic. The sintered metallic are considered the best.

Are your pads new? Are the pads contaminated? Do they need bleeding? All these will give sub-par performance. If you must have aftermarket pads EBC makes several different grades but I have heard different things from different people about quality and performance. I have always had great luck with stock pads. They just need a good hot run to seat themselves. I only change my pads before a lift access day so that I can seat them on my warm-up run since I'm dragging my brakes anyways.

Well the pads are fairly new I might have 4 hrs. on them(New Bike). Its a 6" mechanical system. I am pretty sure there is no contamination. I have cleaned them with automotive brake parts cleaner when I put my new rotors on with my new wheels, which should be perfectly fine. I am just a big guy(215lbs) that wants more grab without upgrading to 8" or hydraulic system.

I have a '68 Chevy 1 ton with drums. Can I get new shoes for it that will make it stop on a dime?

NO

Can't polish a turd.
Those brakes are pretty poor. Bigger rotors will help but spend $150 on ebay for a set of hydros is your solution.

I know what ya mean, I might just go pull the Wilwoods of my drag car and machine a bracket to fit the atleast the back of the bike, then go to friends house to pull the Matercylinder/Lever off his Harley. I am sure he won't mind.
Just Kidding, Thanks for the info.

I like Galfer pads for Hayes brakes they seem they last longer and also the brakes feel like there is more modulation with them installed, ie not as grippy as the sintered Hayes pads. Only down side is that these pads they need to be slighly modified to fit properly " the spring retention hole on the back side of the pad is not large enough and needs to be drilled out slightly. The Galfer pads are also not that easy to find, Adrenaline Bikes is one of the few outfits that carries them in the US.
