I used a Rock Shox post for a season and thought it worked really well. It's definitely not a substitute for full squish, but it definitely helps a lot on a hardtail.:)

I don't use one, but two of my buddies use the RockShox post, and my wife has one on two of her hardtails, including her race bike. She went with the RS post because, when they came out it was the lightest unit available. It's still a lot heavier than a standard post, though, so I was surprised she kept it on her otherwise 23lb rig...she says it's worth the weight. When we built up a spare hardtail last year, she rode it without the RS post then told me to go find a deal on one, pronto.

Based on that, and some sore lower backs, my two buddies got them (Jenson or PricePoint, like $50) and they love them. Yeah, the posts don't make your bike an FS --they're not supposed to-- but they take the edge off small, square edged bumps you hit when pedaling in the saddle.
