This is probably more applicable to riders from the UK. You may or may not know that there is a charity named Sustrans - they aim to open and maintain cycle routes all over the UK. They are looking for new peeps to join in as rangers. Essentially the task involves agreeing to care for a stretch of a route close to home - once a month you ride it and check signing, vegetation overgrowth, vandalism and the like - fix what you can and report the rest. If we can get the whole of the routes across the UK covered then think of the potential - no need at all to worry that a new route you want to try will be unpassable.
