Oy, vey, let's not get on the revisionist-history Japan argument now. We all agree it's not relevant. That's its own 6-page thread.

So you are proposing we nuke Israel..?

I didn't propose anything. I helped explain Kerry's plan and position to you, as you seemed determined to swallow the GOP line that Kerry has no plan or position.

If you want to know my personal position, I can explain that too but it's a different discussion. I'm still lamenting that we didn't nominate Wes Clark.

Actually 15 billion... but all he did was up the $$$ from what was being done previously. [/url]
I wouldn't detract from that. It is a VERY significant amount of funding, and deserving of recognition.

The big problem with it is that while on the one hand we are finally throwing money at the problem, the same administration is rendering billions of those dollars ineffective by discouraging the use of condoms and attempting to promote abstinence in areas of the world where that concept is culturally laughable.

This, along with the Japan discussion, is really another thread.

I'm not trying to detract from it, I'm just not going to allow GWB to take credit for it... it's not like he's the champion of the fight against AIDS.

I love the irony that a man who no longer drinks (for some reason  ), and has two daughters who were known for their drinking while underage, is preaching abstinence.

Didn't work for him or his children when it came to alcohol... why would it work for the rest of the world when it comes to sex?

Anyhow, I think we're all missing the point. The Chechen separatists surely all got their AK47s at Wal-Mart. Do we really want our country to face this sort of thing? I mean, what if a bunch of southern separatists got guns???

Well the Russians went in. Over 100 dead and the separatists fled like little pussies to a nearby house and the Russian forces are at the safe house with tanks. Its only 8 so the numbers aren’t clear yet but estimates are 1500 hostages and over 100 dead due to and explosion. (There not sure who caused the explosion yet) This is a ****ing tragedy. Now all we can do is pray for in wounded.

Read some article that said the explosion happened well before they went in. It happened in the Gym and that much of the 100(est) people died becuase of that explosion. Reports are that the kidnappers were rigging explosives around the building....

maybe one went off? :( I am sure there were losses during the entrance of the russian troops but I think many died when the bomb whent off earlier.

Also read something about the terrorists being blocked in a basement with more hostages.....it was off of MSN.com news blip I am pretty sure. *shrug*

It looks to have been "modified" with more info since I read it but I recognize most of it and it says it was posted at 6:04ET I read it before that.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5881958/

bits:

An explosives expert told NTV television that the commandos charged into the building after bombs — hung in basketball hoops by the hostage-takers — exploded. A sobbing young girl who escaped the school told NTV that a suicide bomber blew herself up in the gym where children were kept captive.

Hours after much of the school was secured, Russian forces traded fire with remaining militants holed up in the basement of a school annex. Officials finally announced that the fighting was over but that four militants remained at large.

Three suspected hostage-takers were arrested trying to escape wearing civilian dress, Channel One TV reported, and Ekho Moskvy radio said a suspected female hostage-taker was detained when she approached an area hospital wearing a white robe.

*Rhino here* What a mess!

Andreyev said there were two large explosions, and people started running. He said militants fired at fleeing hostages, and security forces opened return fire, along with civilian residents of the town who had armed themselves. The police sapper, speaking on NTV television, said bombs hanging from basketball hoops exploded.

The bomb expert said the gym had also been rigged with explosives packed in plastic bottles strung up around the room on a cord and stuffed with metal objects.

Women escaping the building were seen fainting and others, some covered in blood, were carried away on stretchers. Many children — parched, hungry and only partly clothed because of the stifling heat in the gym — ran out screaming and begging for water.
