Ok, here's the DL...I've got an '03 BoXXer Race that needed a little TLC, especially after my last DH race when it started to leak oil out of the seals (gasp - I know this is a freakishly rare problem with these forks)...So, like a good boy (cheap skate who can't afford a real DH fork at the present time), I ordered some new seals and wipers which I promptly installed upon arrival with some new oil...Plus, I even managed to wrangle the new base valve 'upgrade' (i.e. it supposedly doesn't cavitate as badly - but who the hell knows?) from SRAM, so that got installed as well...One thing about BoXXers, even an idiot savant like myself can take'em apart and slap'em back together in short order...Thus, I'm all giddy with excitement that my BoXXer will now work splendidly with the magic new base valve, new oil, and new seals...Needless to say, I was less than estatic when I quickly realized the fork had absolutely NO rebound damping...None I tell you, regardless of how turned the little Rabbit / Turtle knob...Just a big, heavy pogo stick that topped very badly when you yanked up on the handlebars...So I figured the actual damping rod was gone (which it actually was seeing as the plastic oil port at the bottom of the rod was stripped out to point I had to shove a slightly bigger allen key in there to get to work), so I got a new damping rod and put the f'ing thing back together again - and still no rebound damping...OK, so now I assume I somehow installed the base valve incorrectly and no oil was actually going into the damping rod...So after 2 more reconstructions (i.e. this means lots of profane language and at least a cup or two of oil spilled onto the garage floor), it still wasn't working...I was now looking at Expedia flights to Chicago so I could re-arrange some SRAM employee's dental work with a piece of threaded lead pipe :mumble: ...After a less than enlightening phone call to SRAM tech support ("just get a RA number and send it in for us to work on" - this for a fork that is basically worth $100 tops), I was struck by the proverbial Newtonian apple - oil is going around the whole rebound damping rod because either there's a lot of dirt inside the stanchion (which there shouldn't be after the initial cleaning process I did, not to mention the 47 freaking oil changes) or the damping rod just wasn't seating properly inside the stanchion...
Now I give you the ultimate POS, worn out BoXXer upgrade that neither Mojo or Romic know anything about {drum roll - slight pause} = Latex gloves and rubber bands {crashing symbals}
Ended up cutting some pieces out of the fingers of a latex glove (don't ask me where I got these from) and slipping them over the upper seal of the rebound damping rod...Then put a small rubber band around the lower section of the rod where is slips into the base valve...Voila - I now have rebound damping...So I'm really not sure which ghetto-rigged piece of rubber did the trick, but now I can't wait to see how long my little BS band-aid lasts, hence the poll...
Thanks for your input...
Btw, anybody got a 7" 888 for sale??? I'll trade ya for a one of kind BoXXer race
