I just purchased a 2003 SX from a friend. It's a short. So far it's the best handing bike I've ever ridden. Stable yet manueverable... a perfect combination. I did have one question, though. Can you increase the rear trave to around 6 with a longer stroke shock? Or do you have to buy a kit? If anyone has any info, that would be great.

If you think the 03 handles great, wait till you ride an 05:) I believe you will need to purchase the betd plates to run a longer shock. There was a thread about this a while back, might wanna search for it.

I want an SX Trail, but I can't get them. Since I'm really light, I can't ride a full-blown DH bike. I figured that if the regular Enduro had 5 with an air shock, I could get around 6 with a coil. So back to my original question, has anyone tried putting a longer eye to eye shock in the old SX's? By the way, I tried the search function already.

yes BETD does make the enduro plates for the 02-04 enduro and the sx drop them a line they look great and give 5.25 or 6" of travel. You can increase the travel on the sx by using a 7.5x2 shock. The enduro uses a 7.65x2 shock that is unique to that frame and specialized. i think the the sx uses a 6.5 i2i but same linkage.

ok... here is the accurate stuff for the 03/04 SX...

Stock shock is 6.75" i2i, 1.75" stroke.

with BETD plates and stock shock... travel goes to 135mm
with stock plates and 7.5" i2i 2" stroke shock, travel goes to 145mm.

BETD and longer shock is a no-no.

Anything else you hear is inaccurate...

+1 degree on HA, and +0.75" of bb height approximately as far as i am told.

I am very curious with respect to an AVY shock, 7" i2i, 2" stroke... i guess that would be ideal for the SX.

its a good bike... left unexplored...

so any Avy experts around to tell me if the 7" i2i will fit?

So I take it you are going to go ahead and try the BETD plate and fit it with an Avy?
Did you get the new fork yet? You may be happy enough with increased travel up front.

nah, i ll either get the plate or the shock not both....

both shock and plate will screw up things a lot...

main priority is a Z1FR1 150mm and a new seatpost to increase cockpit room

i have an 03 SX and have been watching this thread... it is not complete at the moment because i used parts to complete a 4X hardtail... in the rebuild process now and im wanting it to be a "light duty DH bike"... i live in TX so there ya go...

i would like to be able to get more travel out of the rear and just switch to a long fork instead of having a totally seperate out of state DH bike...

what is the longest travel setup you could run on this frame without it being really weird... im a bmx/hardtail guy so the 5ish range has felt ultra plush to me already... just wondering what i could do for when i go out to CA, CO, etc etc

150mm front, 145mm rear... tried and tested by a guy in the UK.

I've said it once I'll say it again. Altering your bike's geometry is stupid and you'll most likely regret it. If you add travel, you'll take away stability. If you want more travel buy a different bike. I love the SX, but changing it to a FR bike is rediculous! Gah!

thinking more about this now...

with a Fox 36 on the front, and 145mm of travel in the back, how much would the handling be affected? it would be a bit steeper? 70deg-ish?

here is the setup im considering:

SX with FOX 36 up front (what alternative forks would there be that are cheaper)

XT cranks
sun mtnx rims with hadley hubs
avid juicy brakes (7 and 7?)

im wanting to keep it light and nimble...TX is not made for a heavy bike... but i want it to be able to handle stuff when i travel...i dont expect to race world cup DH on it, but i want to be able to ride all but big rock gardens etc...

I can understand wanting to change your bike around to make it more capable, or for different terrain, but the SX is as close to perfect (as it comes) as any bike I've ridden. It is quite willing to be a freeride bike in stock form. Sure it doesn't have endless travel, but it is so stable and strong its more than up to the challenge. With a strong 5" fork you could ride this bike on most any type of terrain, and have a great time. When my dh bike was down last summer I took mine up to Northstar for a day and had a blast. Defiantly a rougher ride than a big bike but plenty capable. The next day we hit Downieville and the SX just rocked. I would be hesitant to screw with the bike's geometry by adding longer stroke shocks and such. The bike's handling is what makes it so great, why jack up the bb and steepen the h/a unless you don't like the way the bike rides to begin with?

i agree. leave the shock set up the way it is. I'm running a Firefly up front and I couldn't be happier with it.

Try a 150mm fork that you can drop down first and if you must have more rear travel than i'd think about a new bike.
that's my .02

Personally I don't ride anything that warrants a 6"+ travel bike, become a better, smoother rider first. Don't get caught up in the see who can take the most in the rear game.

i can't wait to ride again.
it seems like the SE is in this pattern of dry and sunny during the week and cold and raining on the weekends.

I raced on the bike yesterday and decided that 4.2 in the rear and 5 in the front is all I need. That bike just killed the Fontucky course and it felt smoother than my Big Hit. The bike is so controllable that I can slide the front wheel into turns and it feels fine. The SX is the best bike in the world. Period.

A 2002 Marzocchi Z1. It's stiff and decently light. And it's a Marzocchi. I like it a lot on the SX.

Yeah a valve amp is a guitar amplifier that uses tubes instead of transistors in order to produce sound amplification.

I AM IN LOVE... i played with a Fender Blues Jr and it sounded awesome....

i guess the 150mm fork might wait...

I have a 2003 Sherman Slider (6") on my 2004 SX (med size frame) and run the stock propedal vanilla R on the rear. Linkage is flipped to give the lower BB height and 68 degree HA. Swapped out the 750lb spring in favour of a 550 lb mountainspeed spring. I love the way the bike handles. I ride the bike everywhere, local hills and Whistler.

My only beef about the bike is I'm always replacing the DU bushings.... :mumble:

Furious....

if you try that specialized mudguard that attaches on the seatstay bridge, you might forget about re-replacing DU bushings.... i just bought one today...

I saw that on the website... problem is we can't order off the Specialized website in Canada (Specialized won't ship over the border), and local dealers never carry the high-margin specialized accessories (things like shirts, jackets, socks, stickers, pint glasses etc). I went to a few stores looking for the 'sawpit' shoe and they said something about an alottment system and they could not order any sawpits -- the store I went to is one of the biggest Specialized dealers in town. But I went to a different store that's almost like a liquidator and turned out the guy had 250 pairs squirrelled away.... I'm tempted to take a drive down to Washington State and see what US bike shops are like

Sorry to derail the thread, but yes, tube amps are the way to go. I love the sound of them. Due to cost, though, I have a transistor amp.

If you guys like tube amps, check out used silverface Fender amps. They still can be had for relatively cheap. Many of them sound as good as the 60s black Fenders.

Plus they are made better than the modern Fenders. If they are in good condition, they will be very dependable.

i second that Orange makes great tube amps. :thumb:

True tube amps sound so much better than he hybrid Solid State through a tube pre-amp. I've got an old marshall valvestate that i'd love to get rid of and buy a nice LOUD MESA BOOGIE

but since i don't play in bands anymore it's not really practical to spend that kinda dough.

so you are better off getting a 15W all valve class A amp, like the Fender Blues Jr. This is what i am getting instead of a Z1FR1, ah well, the 03 Z1 dropoff will do the job...
