Biting the hand that feeds you?

So Bush actually wants to cut farm subsidies, something the EU actually has pressured us to do. I wonder what his Midwest base feels about that? I actually think it is a good idea. The subsidies create an uncompetative market and increase prices for the consumer. Some feel it protects the family farms, but why do we need family farms? We didn't feel the need to protect blacksmiths from the machine industry or family coachbuilders from the auto industry?

I think this is a GREAT idea! The whole idea of paying farmers not to raise certain crops is stupid...

Yes, this is a good thing for many reasons. One above all others - It helps genuine free trade and especially helps the third world. Bring it on.

In a van.... down by the river
These family farmers should visit a grocery store in a big city, check out what produce is more than $2/lb and start growing that..........

It's kind of like the software people whining because their jobs are going to India.

there is a big deal about this in a coming Free trade treaty between the US and Peru. (in fact with most south america, but each country is dealing alone).

and as far as i read here in the news, in the negociations this week in cartagena, colombia the US is not giving up the farm subsidies, which would be southamerica`s biggest target.

and think about this.. the US subsidies on farms does not only afffect the US prices. it also affects foreign markets. the dumping costs of crops coming from the US cannot compete with peru`s. even when our wages are like a 1/10th part.
