We're kicking off the 2024 Secret Santa! Exchange gifts with other monkeys - from beer and snacks, to bike gear, to custom machined holiday decorations and tools by our more talented members, there's something for everyone.
The first Interbike after 9/11 (like a month or so later), I had to hand-carry a set of Dura Ace cranks from LA to Vegas for a show bike. Took me soooo long to convince security to let me carry them on. From the check-in desk to the metal detectors, to the check-in desk again. It's amazing how a 53t chainring can look like some sort of medievil weapon. The kicker was that when I got there, we had decided to put some Lew cranks on there. Lighter. Nice.
Having said that, I'd probably want to have my shoes, or at least have a bike mag with me to show them what they really were.
Hell, maybe you'll luck out, and get a bike guy who works at the TSA!
Heh.
I was able to take my Looks on board as a carry on a few months ago at Houston. Of course I only had one bag and it had helmet, water bottles, shoes, etc... in it. But they did pull me aside, search the bag, and send the pedals through the xray machine separately.
I carried my shimano spds on, the were more worryied about the coke bottles and fishing reels. gezz, they looked at the reels, and sent them through the X-ray like 3 times
I carried on 2 pairs of mallets, 1 pair of eggbeaters and some candy's in my helmet bag over the summer to various races. They just had me take them out to see what they were, and all was good.
For what it's worth, the helmet bag also contained an entire brake spare parts kits, complete with stainless lines, pads, washers, screws, bolts, washers, calipers and safety wire.
To add to this mess, my other carryone was a camera bag with 3 bodies 5 lenses and 3 flashes + various bits and pieces of chargers, batteries, cards etc.
Just don't put them in the bottom of a big tube sock, then they would consider it a weapon.
The TSA explained this to me when I took my Times in a sock from Reno to New Orleans. Thankfully I went to high school with the TSA guy, and though he almost didn't graduate, he was in charge of my safety...

i got a small allen wrench taken away but not a pedal wrench, its funny i thought the pedal wrench would cause more damage (the bummer is i was going to whistler and needed the tool) Don't ask how they (the tools) got in my cary-on because thats a long story
You know, I think society as a whole has a hell of a lot more things to worry about than airline security. This is why I yell at the news when they do a story on airline security and make people think they're going to die when they get on a plane, when in reality, the radiation from the x-ray machine they walk next to probably in all likelihood has a better chance of killing them.
Historically I've not had any problems carrying bike parts in the passenger cabin, but on my way back from Whistler this year this one chick wouldn't let me carry on my 888. Basically it came down to, she decided to screw with me and there wasn't anything I could do about it. Arguing gets you nowhere, being right gets you nowhere, logic gets you nowhere... if you have any question in your mind about whether to put something in your carryon, don't bother. It's not worth the hassle.

heading out to Vegas with Candy's got me a bag-search at LGA till they found them and figured out what they were. coming back, the screener stopped at my bag, and called the supervisor over. he took one look, laughed, and said that they were pedals, they had apparantly been seeing a lot of them going through security on the Sat after interbike...
My flight to the worlds got cancelled. I almost drove, but 18 hours of driving alone didn't sound too fun, so I had to bag it. Sucks, because I really, really wanted to go.
Sigh.
Some other time...
