Thor Hushovd is off the front on his own. No doubt hunting for sprint points on the other side of the mountain. Boonen went down and

On the attack on the first climb today to get to Hushovd are Vinokourov (TMO), Mancebo (IBA), Botero (PHO), Pereiro (PHO), Horner (SDV), Caucchioli (C.A), Martinez (EUS)... Heras was there (LSW) but has recently been dropped.

They are only about 30" to 45" or so in front of the peleton. Lance has Azevedo, Ruberia, Hincapie, Savoldelli and Popo with him.

Just short of the summit of the first climb.

Discovery is down one vehicle. On the descent after the first climb yesterday all the cars stopped suddenly on a hairpin turn, and Johan rear ended the CSC team car - then Popo, who had stopped to "relieve some pressure", rear ended Johan, and that's how he crashed...

Only Vino and Pereiro are left on the front about 1km from the summit at about 20".

Fassa Bortolo rider Dario Frigo was taken into custody before the start of today's 11th stage of the Tour de France after performance-enhancing drugs were found in his wife's car. Customs officials and local police searched the vehicle near Chambery earlier today, with initial reports suggesting that ten vials of EPO had been discovered.

On the Col du Telegraphe, Vino and Pereiro are leading with Botero hanging on just barely. The yellow jersey is about 1'40" behind safely tucked in with 5 or 6 teamates. About 6km from the top.

I wonder if I am going to be as excited about a TdF without Lance in it?

I hope next year's tour has 3 or 4 guys who are Lance's caliber who will make the race as exciting to watch/listen to as it is today.

15:30 - Beltran Leads Rubiera... Etc
The peloton is being controlled by the ’Disco’ boys. Right now Beltran is setting a pace that’s fast enough to ward off any attacks from others in the yellow jersey’s group, but not fast enough to close in on the three leaders.
Vinokourov, Botero and Pereiro are now 2’50" ahead.

Meet the Monster:

At 8677 feet in elevation, the Col du Galibier is the ceiling of the 2005 Tour de France. This formidable mountain pass, which has been climbed more often than any other in Tour history, gives the race some grandiose Alpine scenery, and at times it takes a merciless toll.

3:47 p.m. - The three leaders are holding a lead of 3:19 p.m. The trio maxed-out at 3:30 and the Disco-chase is beginning to cut the lead down.

Iban Mayo has been shelled, struggling to keep the peloton in sight.

3:50 p.m. - Pereiro has been dropped by Botero and Vinokourov.

3:52 p.m. - Vinokourov and Botero are working nicely together.

Speaking of riding well together... the Discovery team has no fewer than six of its support riders setting tempo at the front. Hincapie is still there.

Mayo has been completely dropped.

3:54 p.m. - The yellow jersey group is now 3:05 behind Vinokourov and Botero.

3:55 p.m. - The peloton is getting smaller, but guys like Landis, Moreau, Rasmussen, Leipheimer, Basso, Ullrich and Kloden are in there. Mayo has completely blown.

3:56 p.m. - Pereiro is trailing the two leaders by 45 seconds and the peloton is at 3:09.

Why? I'm sure his legs will get "blocked" again.

He lost 5'18" in about 10km yesterday on a "lesser" climb.
it doesnt make me comfortable. Maybe he was 'blocked' because of the day off like they say.
i still respect his abilitys. 3 minutes is a lot of time to let him have back.

49 km Alexandre Vinokourov looking a little peeved, tossing dagger glances at Santiago Botero, imploring the Colombian to take a pull... Botero either can't or won't helm the front, leaving Vino to set the pace...

16:02 CEST 124km/49km to go
It's all Alexandre Vinokourov now, as he gets to within 9 km of the summit of the Galibier. Nice riding by the Kazakh champ, who has 3'15 on the Armstrong group, which still numbers 30 or so riders. Savoldelli is leading it now, and there are still Popovych, Azevedo, and Hincapie ahead of Armstrong.

Boogerd is dropped.

3:57 p.m. - Beltran has blown. Discovery is "down" to five riders plus Armstrong. Last Saturday was a fluke, wasn't it?

3:59 p.m. - Vinokourov has moved ahead of Botero. He is looking good, too. He's not suffering like he was yesterday. He's got 3:13 on the peloton, with 49km to go to the finish.

4:00 p.m. - The peloton is now 3:11 behind Vinokourov.

Alexandre Vinokourov (T-Mobile) leads Santiago Botero (Phonak) by 15 seconds and Oscar Pereiro (Phonak) by 1:30 seconds and lead the peloton by 3:15 on the Col du Galibier.

16:06 - 7km To Climb
Vinokourov is now 7km away from the summit of the highest pass in the 2005 Tour de France. He leads Botero by 25", Pereiro by 2’20" and the peloton by 2’50".

4:06 p.m. - Vinokourov has 7km to go to the top, but he looks fresh. Riding well some 35 seconds ahead of Botero and 3:10 ahead of the Armstrong group.

Rubiera is also off the back of the Armstrong group, no surprises there. There are still perhaps 25-30 riders (yes, Basso as well) with the maillot jaune.

A fan with a long horned helmet, a brown skinsuit and a flag of Texas cheers the Armstrong group along. What a sight.

16:11 CEST
Pereiro is caught by the Armstrong group, as Horner goes out the back too.

Horner has been dropped by the peloton.

4:11 p.m. - Armstrong still has four teammates setting tempo at the front. Pereiro has been totally shelled and is dropped by the peloton.

4:12 p.m. - Kloden looks to be in a bit of trouble, but Ullrich is still sitting behind the yellow jersey.

With less than five kilometers to go, Vinokourov is still 3:05 ahead of the group.

4:15 p.m. - POP! There goes Kloden. He's off the back.

4:18 p.m. - Vino' is holding a 37-second lead over Botero, and the gap to the Armstrong group is at 2:58... with 4km to go to the top.
