Ranks of Poor, Uninsured Rose in 2003
By GENARO C. ARMAS, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - The number of Americans living in poverty increased by 1.3 million last year, while the ranks of the uninsured swelled by 1.4 million, the Census Bureau reported Thursday.

It was the third straight annual increase for both categories. While not unexpected, it was a double dose of bad economic news during a tight re-election campaign for President Bush.

Approximately 35.8 million people lived below the poverty line in 2003, or about 12.5 percent of the population, according to the bureau. That was up from 34.5 million, or 12.1 percent in 2002.

The rise was more dramatic for children. There were 12.9 million living in poverty last year, or 17.6 percent of the under-18 population. That was an increase of about 800,000 from 2002, when 16.7 percent of all children were in poverty.

yup this administration has turned it's back on the common man. New labor laws just flew in under the radar, work over 40 hours in a week don't look forward to getting any overtime pay.....
Great way for employers to get what they want, work you to death, you get tired of it or make mistakes, get canned or quit, get replaced for someone who makes dirt....

The good news is that this is what one would expect since we are still coming out of a recession," said Sheldon Danzinger, co-director of the National Poverty Center at the University of Michigan.

I'm confused, I thought that it had been decided that there hadn't been a recession after all...

Even more confusing, from the same article:

Quote:
------------------------------------------------------------------------
More people lacked health insurance as well — about 45 million last year, or 15.6 percent, compared with 43.5 million, or 15.2 percent the previous year.
------------------------------------------------------------------------

And later in the same article:

Quote:

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Republicans noted that the number of people with health insurance also increased — up 1 million to 243 million.
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Either the population of the US increased by 2.5 million in the last year (which is rather large) or there's some dodgy statistical manipulation at work.

But Bushy has created so many jobs, and done so much good for our people. How can this be?
Oh that's it! Most of those jobs are overseas in india, come on you know the credit card phone calls I'm talking about. Some guy who can barely speak english telling you his name is "James Stone". i love screwing around with those guys. Last time I started screaming "don't touch my dog there, i said don't do it, I'll fuking kill you" Then i lit off a firecracker and asked him if he knew the best way to dispose of a body. :sneaky:

However, 87.69% of statictics are useless....
I once used that line on a dweeb over at another MTB forum* and he was enraged that I dare question his statistics and then try and prove him wrong with another statistic of my own. Totally over his head...

*MTBR, and it took me several minutes to remember the website...
