Yeah especially since Gott ist totI'm not seeing the God connection, but yeah...sucks for them pretty bad.
phew!!!thankfully it did not affect the premier of american idol.

What were they going to do about it?Is it just me, or does anyone find it odd/irritating that they (Haiti as a country) was warned in advance that something like this could happen?

So it was all or nothing? Unless they could achieve excellent seismic retrofitting it wasn't worth trying to improve anything at all? What were they going to do about it?
It's not like rebuilding Port au Prince from the ground up with Tokyo level building codes was an option, right?
The US couldn't do it in New Orleans. You expect a country with this situation:So it was all or nothing? Unless they could achieve excellent seismic retrofitting it wasn't worth trying to improve anything at all?
Just because you're not improving buildings doesn't mean you can't be prepared for a natural disaster. Food, flashlight&batteries (or candles), clean water, blankets...The US couldn't do it in New Orleans. You expect a country with this situation:

to be able to do much?
Think again:I'm beginning to think Catholics might not be the chosen people.
Cool, that I did not know. Was that part of an organization? Like MSF for civil engineers?Actually, there is a lot you can do for earthquake readiness in poor countries. When I was in Nepal, one of the other westerners I got to know was over there educating homebuilders on how to build more earthquake resistant homes at no additional cost and using the same materials they were already using, just a slightly different method for joining walls and floors.
She was German and working through some EU equivalent of the Peace Corps... it was more than a decade ago and I don't recall exactly. I should also be fair and say what she was doing only applied to concrete structures, so commercial buildings, middle-class or above homes, and urban homes. If you're in a mud hut or tin shanty, you're pretty-well ****ed (although they hurt less than concrete when they collapse on you).Cool, that I did not know. Was that part of an organization? Horrifying. People, if you can donate, please do. I recommend both Red Cross and Doctors Without Borders as organizations with the scale to provide significant, fast, efficient relief.Photo Essay, Haiti post quake [quite graphic]
