Twist my arm...any chance of a post-RACE shred on sunday? i'm working tomorrow but might be able to sneak away to get a preview of the DB on sunday
perhaps i could bring some tasty adult beverage to celebrate your belated 21st bday?Twist my arm...
I cant say enough good things about what is happening at this place. First the basic facts
There is currently 1 complete trail. It starts at the top of the mountain and descends around 500' (I have not d/l my GPS info yet) to where the base of the lifts/village area is.
From that Mid point you can continue to descend through some grassy fields/bunny slopes to a slightly unfinished trail that requires you to dismount to access part of it descends further. Total elevation loss is 850-1000' (again I havent DL my gps info).
The Finished trail which will be the race course is very well built and has a little bit of everything.
-Fast Grassy turns
-small rock gardens
-off camber steepish turns
-A pretty descent rock garden that isn't total Gnar, but it takes some thought to get a good line, that ends in a small drop (2-3') or so.
- a Rythm section including a double, to a step down to a decent sized gap. (you can roll the first 2 jumps, and there is an alternate line for the gap). No one I was riding with yesterday hit this in its entirety. It is a commitment line for sure mostly because of the speed you will carry by hitting all 3 jumps in succession.
-Very Steep BIG BERMed switchbacks.
- a nice sized step up that has little/no penalty for coming up short (I know this from personal experience)
- The trail ends with a nice steep shoot to a 4' drop that looks a little intimidating at first (We all sized it up before hitting it). But after the first time it is smooth as butter and you almost want to hit it at full speed just for the fun factor. You can also see this drop clearly from the Patio Deck of the village/resteraunt/patio thing where most people would be haning out.
We were there for about 3.5 hours and I think we got 10+ runs. That included a few runs where we stopped and checked most of the stuff out. Another run that went all the way to the bottom, and another where we were shown some of the other stuff that is being built.
The bottom trail was equally as fun and you can clearly see the potential when they will be linked. From the bottom of the race course you blast through some open fields (down hill) that have some nice little jumps that will probably be better once there is a clear line dedicated into some techy single track with a small wood to wood gap (reminded me of a small fire pit gap at PeeWees) to another nice size rock jump.
A number of times we were greated by the owner of the resort at the bottom and he (an older gentlement in his late 60's or so) was very pleased that we were there checking it out (for FREE I might add) and having a great time. He "asked" if it would be better if the lift was on. (which would take you right to the top).
Additionally they had just opened a very long zip line course that looked like a blast. It started at the bottom of the lifts and it had 4 sections that descended to where the bottom of the last trail exited.
Some additional commentary.
I was on my Demo which was great for the rock sections, but I left wondering if the Heckler would have been better. The Rock gardens are no joke, so I would definitly have to watch my line/speed the the techiest sections vs the Demo, but it might just be a little more fun on the super twisty berms. I cant wait to bring them both up there.
If you get the chance, go support this place.
he hit the 2nd to last chute, the very last one with the drop was a bit much for him. he was sooo close to hitting the big rock garden, even worked his way up to $20 from those in attendance to try it but i think it freaked him out a bit and the rest of his first run was sketch 'cause he was so nervous and bummed that he didn't hit it. 2nd run was smooth and fun though.....Wow...Noah is killing it! I'm stoked that he hit that last steep chute.
I was lucky enough to check this place out Sunday as well. Here is what I posted on the Charlotte area MTB Forums.
LiamWow...looks like we really need to get on building more trails and charging admission. Glad you liked it. Sorry I was a no-show yesterday...I was in a total haze for a few hours after ringing my bell in my race run at beech.
We're thinking about trying to build some stuff down on the golf course for full length runs, but for the most part we're just concentrating on the steep slopes/old ski area.
Who showed you around?
absolutely... Hopefully I didnt come off as anything but positive...keep in mind its actually NOT open to the public right now. Please let people know that you need permission AND a guide to be out there if you're not in "the crew".
Long term.. Everything ending at the lift is great, but more is always better. I liked that last part including going wide open through the grassy fields popping off those little rises.Wouldn't you rather see more full-on DH runs from the top of the lift to the lodge rather than adding pedalling and flat sections to ride to the bottom?
Rob, having you guys up was great and I was glad I got to meet you. I'm only sorry I had to go work and couldn't ride the rest of the day. Mueller, Moto and the goon squad moved a LOT of dirt and they're justifiably protective of the trail they spent so many hours shoveling on. Access will become a real issue for us and we simply won't deal with the liability issues that come from being open to the public until we have all the parts in place. I know y'all are fully aware of this but I'm just posting it for everyone's sake.absolutely... Hopefully I didnt come off as anything but positive...
Fantastic news..with a good showing of interested people for our races I'd say there's a solid chance we can do something with 2 wheels up here by next summer.
Liam, thanks again for showing us the course on Sunday. Definitely some top notch building going on up there. Great job to all involved.Rob, having you guys up was great and I was glad I got to meet you. I'm only sorry I had to go work and couldn't ride the rest of the day. Also as you all know now, these guys can build some damn trail... We're gonna try to do a demo day late in this month, and we've been discussing all possible angles for trying to get a bike park off the ground here. Having a bunch of happy riders out definitely helped the cause this weekend.
We'll be sure to keep everyone posted, I can't see any chance of opening to the public this season but with a good showing of interested people for our races I'd say there's a solid chance we can do something with 2 wheels up here by next summer.
Thanks for the kind words and impressing the owner. We plan to have more than a few other trails up on the hill eventually, among other things.Liam, thanks again for showing us the course on Sunday. Definitely some top notch building going on up there. Great job to all involved.
If a few more trails of that quality are built, I would easily pay to ride up there quite often.
This picture was one of those annoying adds on facebook.
The irony is Trill, Mueller and Mike all 3 decked out in armor don't add up to 1 Manimal!Hello bowl berms! Takes a lota diggin to make that many berms. Bet you boys got prison arms!
To collectively thump all of our various chests, with the upper part of Sugar and all the little tweaks to the lower sections of it plus it being screaming fast, it's so sick now! Beech has the goat trail mentality going and Dirty Bird just puts you through every known skill test. I even had a retardo grin ripping a DH bike on the Lees McRae slalom in the AM that day. That was actually an idea earlier this year. Maybe sometime in the future we can have the High Country Cup series. I really wish Sugar would resurrect the original Showdown at Sugar.
Consider them the army ants of trail building.
PBR really helps keep me hydrated so I can stave off those arm cramps that set in after six hours of straight up digginMore like human tractors that are fueled by PBR, a safe mindset and gravity.
