Post what you have done to your 888, your weight, and riding style.

Im running;
stock spring in one leg
x heavy 3.5k D35 spring in the other
Maxxima 7.5 wt oil set at 195mm from top
Preload in the middle
silver Go-Ride upper and lower crowns

I weight 185 and use the fork on my Fly for everything DH/FR/XC. My only bike for now. Bike weighs 43 lb.

springs: stock
spring preload: second clip
Oil: stock weight and height (haven't touched it in other words)
compression: 12-16 clicks in
rebound: 5-8 clicks in
extras: core rat fork guards (yeah there gay, but so is replacing
stanchion tubes)
rider weight: 165
riding style: I don't suck, but I don't rip either

All stock and it's fine, but I'm no super racer or huck master. I do notice some brake dive on steeper stuff and pedal bob, but nothing worse than any other fork I've owned.

I'm intereted in a any solid descriptions on how using that compression sleeve thing has helped people. I've read that tuning guide web page on go-ride where it shows how to install it and all, but is it really worth it? Will it dramatically improve brake dive and pedal bob or are heavier springs and more oil a better option?

I weigh about 185 and I set it up the way Scott (go-ride) told me to in his setup article. With the compression sleve 3 holes I believe?

I know this has been hit on before but I can't get a clear answer...I may be riding a 888RC which comes stock on the GT DHi...is this the same as the 888R? Can I do the mods the go-ride.com article specifies...

"03" 888. Previously owned by Cameron Zink. Golden Specro 7.5 (enough so it don't bottom) 3.5 clicks comp or 1 full turn. Reb. 6 3/4 turns in. Comp. side middle preload, reb. side top position. Direct mount stem, Go-Ride Lower crown! Stock upper! Med. M1, AVY. My 170 lbs. Most likely will further tune.
Best fork I've had, Loves to be ridden Hard !

Started with heavy springs in both legs, went to 1 stock & 1 heavy
Installed the Risse lowering crowns
Installed the compression adaptor, messed around with a few settings
Used Golden Spectro 7.5wt oil filled to Marzocchi specified height and experimented around with various heights too.

Sold the fork and bought an Avalanche DHF-8, couldn't be happier.

Nope, had a WB DH118 back in 98, you were probably still in dipers back then.
Nope, I was customer # 2 (and that was DC118) right behind you for the same fork. It never would get through the break in period....then one day my mechanic pointed out that my stanchions were pointing almost straight down.

Also was standing at Mt. Snow that year watching Dan White tell people to pour motor oil in their lowers to lubricate the seals. And him dissing a kid who asked him to work on his fork that didn't have any stickers on it. He humilated him and said he couldn't prove it was a White brothers.....it was funny!

NORCAL is the hizzle
'04 888 200mm on a VP-Free. DH/freeride/jumping. Me, about 195lbs.

Stock springs
Golden Spectro Cartridge Fork Oil 125/50 (Equivalent of 7.5wt, so I'm told, but anyway it feels great.)
Max preload
Oil level, 190mm from the top
Go-ride lowriders top and bottom
Low Speed Compression Sleeve leaving two holes exposed
Rebound, about 1/2 to faster, depending on what I'm riding
Compression, all the way out (can't notice a difference and have tuned the compression with the oil level and LS sleeve.)

Great fork once it's dialed. LS sleeve is a must and should come stock IMO, otherwise it's a dive-o-matic and that makes it harder to get the oil level dialed. As for the crowns...well I've said enough previously, do a search. :D

My UD-150 worked great....it was when they "upgraded" our team to UD-180 that everything went to hell.........I always thought those sponges for the motor oil were the funniest things ever put in a fork. Not that WB really had anything to do with those forks other than putting there name on them.

Box Stock!(other than our crowns).
But then again i only weigh 130lbs so the stock springs are a tad firm for me so i don't need the sleeve to keep the dive down.

Is 190-185mm from the top the best oil level in the 888? I need to add a little oil. The fork is making a slight clank when bottoming. The oil is set 195 from the top right now. Help. Ive got it apart right now.

185 from the top is the max recommended oil height. You need to remove the springs, fully compress the stanctions, and cycle the cartridge to be sure it is full. Then fill to 185mm from the top.

How is knowing what other people did to a fork useful. Do other people ride your bike? Do you care what other people think? Everything mountain biking is based on personal preferences, I don't see how this is useful.

It's good to hear how people tuned their 888 so you have a good place to start and things to try, rather than screwing things up. :D

Your statement was well thought out.:D  Who agrees????
