ACLU restores biblical verse to high school yearbook

The Associated Press
5/12/2004, 6:34 a.m. ET

STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. (AP) — The American Civil Liberties Union, perhaps better known for helping keep religion out of the classroom, came to the defense of a high school graduate whose yearbook entry was censored because it contained a biblical verse.

everything michigan
ok, silver, i hope you're happy now.

but really, why didn't she approach the ACLJ instead???

What, exactly, are you refering to??

"Her entry included the biblical verse, Jeremiah 29:11: "`For I know the plans I have for you,' declares the Lord, `plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.'"

Where is the hate speech?

The ACLU advocates INDIVIDUAL rights, like free speech. They did just that in this example.

Also I think they'd defend the right to post retarded threads, please take note.

:D

the only reason i posted the story is to avoid being t-bagged by silver.

i still find this latest stunt by them confusing, when they go around the country during the holidays trying to get creches, menorahs, and christmas trees taken down before anyone has even contested their mere existence.

What is so hard to understand. They do not go around trying to enforce any particular political doctrine, they try to defend peoples rights as described in the Bill of Rights (check it out some day, 'tis a good read). If the School wanted to display that quote it would violate the separation of church and state. As an individual the student had a right to her freedom of speech.

What is equally strange is that you referred to it as a hate speech?

The article was a little vague but it seems as though the quote although from the bible was clearly the views of the student not an official quote from the school. If the quote was from an ambiguous or "official" source it should have been removed.

while i agree, i would also expect someone who didn't want it in their yearbook to say, "i don't want to be proselytized in the only version of my public school yearbook". And while i also acknowledge a successful counter argument (no doubt used in this case) that this hypothetical student was under no obligation to purchase the yearbook, as is no one is obligated to drive by a creche, menorah, or christmas tree.

i'm just having a time trying to figure them out.
when i think they'll zig, they zag.

sorta like "in god we trvst" on coinage? Not biblical, certainly, but godly no less.
