Woman, 60, fights croc to save man

Perhaps the luckiest man in Australia is recovering in the Cairns Base Hospital after a 60-year-old woman wrestled a crocodile in far north Queensland to free him from its jaws.
The woman jumped on the back of the 4.2-metre reptile as it dragged the man from the tent in which he had been sleeping beside his wife and baby in the early hours of yesterday morning and was making for a river, about 50 metres away.
The crocodile let go of the man but turned on his rescuer, pulling her towards the water and breaking her arm with a flick of its tail before another person shot the reptile, killing it.
Authorities said the man and the woman - believed to be part of a family group of 11 from Brisbane - were lucky to have survived the dramatic attack. "Extraordinary" was how Stephen Penberthy of the Queensland Royal Flying Doctor Service described the rescue, which occurred at a camping site in coastal bushland north of Cooktown.
"A crocodile takes the man and the woman hears a commotion, sees what's happening and she jumps on the confounded thing," Mr Penberthy said. "It's an act of heroism.
"It would have been a different story if the croc had made it to the water with the guy."
The pair were flown to Cairns Base Hospital where they are in a serious but stable condition. The man has a broken arm and leg, while both sustained wounds from the crocodile's jaws.
Video footage from the scene showed the crocodile lying dead in the middle of the campsite, only a metre from one tent and a few metres from where campers were trying to treat the injured man.
"It's heating up and the crocodiles are becoming more active," said Mark Read, of the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service. "But on this occasion it's difficult to understand what's motivated the animal."
The 34-year-old man and his rescuer were taken to a ranger station in the Lakefield National Park before their helicopter flight to Cairns.
Crocodile attacks are not uncommon in the wilder parts of northern Australia. Last week a Canberra man lost the top of a finger as he tried to free a crocodile caught in nets in the Nassau River on Cape York Peninsula.
"People who travel into these parts of north-west Queensland really have to be aware that crocodiles are there, and they're pretty dangerous creatures," Mr Penberthy said.
It doesn't really say whether she was the guy's wife or just another member of the group, but given that the guy was in the tent with his wife and baby, I'm guessing not. Quite the pair of brassies on that lassie...
The croc was a victim of its own stupidity. Instead of snapping up the baby or the wife, it grabbed onto the leg of a crochety old fart thereby disturbing his beautysleep. Anyways, when two 60-year olds can best you, it's time to look into a career as a belt, luggage or loafers.
