Erm, Wasn't that the CIA who funded and trained the Taliban?

What goes around comes around. Going even further back the CIA are indirectly responsible for the very creation of the entire idea of radical Islam that now inspires your enemies. Now that is Irony.

Locally referred to as Pakistan's "secret army" and the "invisible government", the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) was founded soon after independence in 1948. Today it dominates the country's domestic and foreign policies. It is also responsible for manipulating the volatile religious elements, ethnic groups and political parties that are disliked by the army.

Trained by the CIA and the French SDECE, the ISI "ran" the mujahideen in their decade-long fight against the Soviets in Afghanistan in the 1980s. Brigadier Mohammed Yousaf, who headed the ISI's Afghan bureau for four years until 1987, says in his book The Bear Trap that the agency funnelled US money and weapons to the mujahideen.

In the early 1990s the ISI provided logistic and military support for the Taliban, and helped them to seize power in Kabul five years ago.

Thereafter, it maintained a formidable presence across Afghanistan, helping the Taliban to consolidate their hold. The tactics used included bribery and raids that wiped out villages of different ethnic tribes. It is the knowledge gained of the Taliban into which the US is tapping as it plans punitive raids.

Intelligence sources said that the ISI-CIA collaboration in the 1980s assisted Osama bin Laden, as well as Mir Aimal Kansi, who assassinated two CIA officers outside their office in Langley, Virginia, in 1993

No. You're thinking of the mujahedeen. The Taliban was backed by the Pakistanis and the Saudis, and started mostly as a political/religious student movement, originally a faction of the mujahedeen.

I haven't read anything that leads me to believe that the CIA was responsible for the Taliban.

Think of the mujahedeen like the Christian right. They are only effective when the have a common enemy. Once that common enemy is gone, they'll start infighting.

They aren't any worse than a good chunk of anti-Christian cartoons. Where are the "normal" Muslims speaking out against all this violence?

Theres "NORMAL" muslims?

Ha, too funny. You know, that's the thing that really blows me out. Maybe it's our media playing politics, but I've yet to hear from one *respected* Muslim leader really speak out and condemn the violence that is going on around the world. What does that tell you? I listen to talk radio at work most of the day (both sides of the politacl isle thank you) and this has been the hot topic for the last few days. Plenty of followers of the so called "religion of peace" have called in to comment and not one of them have unequivically denounced what's happening. Everything is countered with a "but you don't understand."

Effing backwards azz people....WAKE UP!!! It's NOT 7th century anymore!
