The dark and grey area of External BB Bearings and Cranks

took the red pill
Sorry folks, but it's current technology and I want answers, so we must go there. It's a grey area for sure, but I want peeps to go out and buy Saint cranks  Diabolus Cranks with external bearings and Evil DRS's and SRS's and go to town. Here's what I'm thinking of doing with my new frame and here are my concerns. I will buy this sheite and I am going to hack, hammer, drill, grind, dremel, saw and beat this sheite into place. Pipe in hand :dead: :blah: , I will try my best to get this sheite to work (as the guinea pig) and delve into the evils of this grey area of ununiversal standards. I can't wait to get this crap in so I can start the butchery . I've emailed DW and JohnP about this and waiting to hear what they say. Now what I'm not sure about on the frame is if it has ISCG tabs or not. Here's what I've asked them.
I'm getting a hollowpoint MTX (ordering it early next week) and I'm contemplating this setup .
Race Face Atlas Cranks with the X-type Outboard Bearings with a Evil DRS. What I'm wondering is the following.
A. Since the bearings sit outside the shell, effectively making the whole width of the BB wider, it seems to me that the spindle would need to be wider (when running a 22/32/bash setup) so that the 22 ring will have enough clearance. What I fear is the following.
1. since the bb is effectively wider, I will run into chainline problems
2. the boomerang or flange (depending on whether the bike has ISCG tabs, and whether the ISCG tabs will still be accessible with those big bearings) wont be able to fit behind the bearings.
I know I'm probably making this way more complicated than it need be, but this is the setup I'm trying to get to work. If it wont, then I wont even bother. I'm sure if Race Face has any common sense, they've tested their BB with your SRS guide, but perhaps not with a DRS.
What do you suggest?

Can't help with the specifics, but everything I have heard about outboards is that they are noce b/c you can take them out of salt water when you a boating on the ocean. I am sorry. That was bad.
I believe that chainline is unaffected. I know that on my normal bb bikes, the 22T ring revolves around the BB shell.

e13/Evil can answer your questions. They have made a Saint crankset fit an SRS, though apparently it wasn't completely straightforward. I'm guessing (but not certain) the story will be the same for any of the similar style cranks. They are also quite familiar with the MTX.

Just give them a call. They are nice guys.

Your concerns make perfect sense. However, I would guess that the placement of the chainring mounting points on outboard bearing cranksets are shifted inward as to not affect chainline.

As far as the placement of the boomerang goes... from what I understand, the cranksets are made for a 73mm bb shell. If you have a 68, you'll run spacers on both sides. So... if you've a 68mm bb shell, the boomerang will take the place of the spacer on the drive side.

I'm not sure what your options are if you have a 73mm bb shell though. However, I think that I read that the spindles have a bit of adjustment, so I would imagine that you can shift the spindle to the drive side a bit so that the crankarms clear on the drive side.

I'm thinking of mating an atlas crankset to DRS myself.

Yeah it would be nice to actually see a phucking photo of the things mounted on a bike with detail. But I suppose Race Face would go out of business if they spent the time and revenue to provide such. Pisses me off man. Someone told me that a certain BIG local New England company has been bugging Race Face for months regarding getting some of these cranks to test with a VERY POPULAR chainguide system. I'm almost ready to go Saint :dead: instead. NOT. It just sucks when you call 2 companies (the local one is not at fault as they don't have the cranks caus Race Face wont send them) and Race Face and they can't tell you if the guide will fit with their cranks. Now if you were Race Face, wouldn't you test your new BB system with the most popular chainguide/bash setup in the world? Would make sense if you ask me caus then you could market the cranks as fitting (the most popular chainguide system ever) but I guess people, especially in business don't think logically. I think I'm just gonna keep my ISIS setup. If Race Face can't tell me if it will fit or not with the chainguide, well, I guess they don't want to sell cranks that bad do they? I'll just wait for Truvativ to come out with some. That's my RANT for the day.
