“We would also like to remind the community of these four basic water safety tips: 1) wear a life jacket as provided for free by county Parks & Recreation, 2) know your limitations when entering any body of water, 3) moderate your alcohol intake, and 4) always swim with someone else who can provide or reach out to others for help during an emergency.”

Every summer my ER and ICU has a nice uptick in moto wrecks and drownings. Most of the riders are unhelmeted and riding like jackasses on 84, most of the drownings are drunk and without any sort of PFD. I don't feel bad for them - but for those they leave behind and/or others harmed due to their asshat behaviour.

Fall/winter is old dudes having an MI or CVA while cleaning leaves out of their gutters or clearing snow.

Drunk holiday shit happens year round. Lots of roofing accidents (falls of course, usually when they are cutting corners and not using any safety shit) 3/4 of the year as well.

Almost witnessed a recipient of the award and then wished it upon someone in the same spot on the road an hour later today.

First was as we headed up a mountain road on road bikes this morning (Squaw Pass from Bergen Pkwy for anyone local). Probably less than a mile from the start of the road a sport bike accelerated past us probably doing 80mph+. A few seconds later from around a blind bend there was a bang noise. I commented to my wife that maybe his engine had blown up for riding like a dick. We round the bend and there's a bike sized dent in the back of a car with the bike a leaking mess in the middle of the road with a jeep pulled off to the side in the downhill lane.

Presume he rounded the bend and couldn't overtake because of oncoming and couldn't stop in time - this was in a 30mph limit. He seemed to be up and moving though...

An hour later after we'd ascended up and then descended back to pretty much the same spot, I was doing ~40ish and had traffic coming towards me uphill. Some dick in his trophy E39 5 Series decides he needs to overtake me and has to squeeze back in. I held my cool not to curse him out at the traffic lights he was stuck at 1/4 mile later. I just wished him a fiery death.

That was a lot of patience shown. Much more than I was expecting.
Strangely, I have always found the Canadian border guys to be much more hard-assed then the US guys with the questions. It sometimes seems that my own country doesn't want me back.
I have had good and bad experiences going both directions, I don't know what was worse, almost having a gun pulled on me while crossing back over in Detroit because I couldn't immediately find the trunk release on a rental car or being detained for 2 hours crossing into Waterton Lake and getting asked hundreds of questions about my finances.

Probably over a hundred crossings into candadia land by vehicle from WA, ID, MT and never one single issue, even after 9/11 or covid. But 1 out of 3 crossing back into the States turns into a debacle every time. Not sure what is up with US border and customs in the north but they need an attitude adjustment,

Mexico on the other hand is always a slow roll and hardly ever been stopped for more than 30 seconds. either way

Well, to be accurate, it was his lack of parachuting that he died from.
