The death of "common" hardware

I got some third-party brake pads and they didn't come with cotter pins, so I wandered over to Aubuchon's hardware. I think the pins are 2 mm x 25 mm, didn't figure I'd find metric, but expected to find something close.

Fat chance. They had one box of pins in a few sizes, none useful. This has happened with other hardware, like trying to find a particular bolt in 1-1/4 rather than 1 or 1-1/2. I would even buy a box of 100 if necessary, pref. in stainless.

Anybody know a good source of nuts, bolts, washers, cotter pins, etc.?

try www.mcmaster.com they are mail order but usually you can get what you need in about 3 days, they have everything from sheets of lexan to drillbits to helicoils to spanner wrenches, in plenty of different grades too.

We keep a few bins of random nuts, bolts, and other things at our shop. You can usually find what you need in those, but it often takes a while.

Well, how far away is your bike shop? Or do you just not like those guys? Mail order has never struck me as convienent, although sometimes a good bargain, not really all that convienent. And hardware stores around here never have enough supply of metric stuff to be worth the bother on most things.

The closest bike shop to home is owned and staffed by very idealistic, nice people, and completely disorganized. Asked for this piece, they'd typically root in the junk box, then expect me to be pleased when they offer a used spoke as a substitute. Parts orders are month long struggles at the best.

There's one by work that I like, but every, underscore every, time I come in looking for pads for my Julies it's a week long ordering exercise. Last time it was two weeks because they got the wrong ones. When the right ones came, no cotter pins. This is not their fault, but it's negative reinforcement. I suppose they might have a pin, but I have become less than hopeful.

What, you mean a used spoke is not an adequate substitute?! Hee hee ;)

Good luck on your quest to find a sutible pin, it never hurts to call the manufacturer directly and ask them if they are willing to help you out with a small part like that. Most of the time when I have done this the part is there the next day, and you can make inside connections that may come in handy later on...:p
