Something like 25% of the air pollution in California actually crosses the Pacific from Asia. California residents and companies then have to deal with higher costs of living/doing business to control air pollution. In this aspect the cheap chinese products simply have deferred costs that we pay for indirectly.
Alaska, the last frontier. Nothing but stunning views, pristine air, right? Well, maybe not. It turns out, cities in the interior of Alaska are recording some of the worst air pollution in the country - in the world. Remember those pictures of smoke-chogged(ph) Beijing? In November, air quality readings in the Alaskan town of North Pole were actually twice as bad as Beijing. What's dirtying the air in Alaska? Well, a lot of it is due to wood. Cities in the interior like Fairbanks and North Pole are some of the coldest inhabited regions on the planet, with temperatures really - regularly dipping to minus 40 below in the winter. But with the price of fuel skyrocketing, Fairbanks residents are turning to one of the most affordable ways to heat their homes: burning wood. And this is causing all kinds of problems for the environment and for people's lungs.
Smog in Chinese cities is an everyday occurrence - it only makes the news here when periodically. When I flew into Beijing three years ago, I thought it was cloudy and we were going to punch through eventually and land. When we touched down while still in the very thick cloud, I thought... oh, it must be foggy here. Nope, that was smog. On sunny days there was still a haze above the cities we visited with the only respite being to climb a mountain up above the smog ... then it was pretty clear what was going on.

Air quality in the Western US states in wintertime is a serious problem which is why there are bans in various areas during that time. NASA has also stated the two most important pollutants to limit to rapidly curb climate change are black carbon (from burning biomass) and methane.
Somewhere I have some lovely shots of San Diego from about 30 miles out to sea. You can't see any land, but there was a nice tan cloud on the horizon where the city was.
