Some of the comments on that page in addition to what we are hearing out of this country sound like precursors to a war of religion. The extremists on both sides are getting louder and our involvement in Iraq, Afghanistan/Pakistan and now Libya is only creating more haters of the US.

I fear this is the stuff that will lead us down a path that cannot be reversed. All it takes is one major political assassination and all hell could be unleashed.

Expanded version: Freedom of Religion is the ability to practice and worship however you want as long as it doesn't infringe on the basic human rights of others. If you want to beat yourself for drinking alcohol, that's fine. If you want to beat someone ELSE for drinking alcohol, that's *not* fine. If you want to only subsist on nuts, grass and berries, that's fine. When you "accidentally" kill your 3mo old baby because you only fed her nuts, grass and berries, that's *not* fine. Mercy killings, honor rapes, beatings, etc are all violations of someone's basic human rights, and are therefore not subject to any type of "freedom of religion" defense.

Or to paraphrase, "Your right to practice religion ends at the tip of my nose."

Happy?

edit: Unless you mean to say that this is also blurring the line between religious freedom and human rights?

i would assert the flexible definition of a "basic human right" appears to create a logical impasse when it infringes upon religious freedom. i'm not talking about teh ghey so much as i am internet access. if it's a right, then some cute ACLJ (not 'U') lawyer could make some equally bizarre infringement case representing the hasidic community. best i can tell, you cannot opt out of recognizing human rights one day per week.

and from the bizarre to the current/relevant: positions of authority within religious organizations are compelled to recognize a "right" that's counter to their doctrine -- the same doctrine invoked in within gov't, too (e.g., DOMA). another thread for another day...

or not.

I thought that you were going to bring up a different Hasidic story and their "right" to not be offended by cyclists in skimpy outfits.... Either of which would bring up far more of a "Freedom of Religion" vs "Basic Human Rights" question than the article linked to above.

Or am I just forgetting the "batsh!t crazy Christian or Orthadox Jews = good, batsh!t crazy Muslims = bad" mantra that's been declared here in the US?

by & large, your camp won't stand up to muslims b/c either pretext to manufactured slights is a helluva drug, or you're a bunch of pussies [not all of you, of course. some of you are rather butch] b/c you know the muslim community has a hair trigger by comparison to the big, bad creche displaying fundies who invoke their creator @ a h.s. graduation ceremony

"My camp"? do we all look alike to you?

:p

But I highly doubt you'll find any lefties defending the Muslims' right to beat the crap out of this guy, just like you won't find any righties defending the woman who shoved bible pages into her infant's mouth and then killed her. If you can, I'll fully admit I'm wrong...

the appearance is one of inconsistent outrage.

as for the mom: i believe there's a rule akin to a "one bite rule" for dogs. so if any other fundie does it again, we'll hold court & pen a sharply worded open letter from the desk of rick warren, written in the style of the particular translation used.
