Markets Need to See the Government Panic

It seems hard to believe but it was only 16 days ago that the U.S. stock market was at record highs. It has since fallen more than 25%, marking the fastest time between a new high and a bear market in history. The old record was set in 1929, when it took 42 days over the course of September and October of that year to drop into a bear market. It is never good when the market is breaking a record set in 1929!

He can just declare bankruptcy and then lie into another investor somewhere. And if it all goes to shit just get daddy to bail everyone out. That's why I voted for trump. We need someone with real business experience here! And the stable genius has it!

Market's open. We're holding at ~3%, but from my internals, the sell orders are huge and they are mutual fund, which means they process overnight.

Is it nap time yet?

I just explained r0 and the exponential growth of the virus, morbidity/mortality rate, etc. of this to my boss and how it impacts supply/demand-side economics, the 80% pay-check to pay-check US population, and high US service industry economy and he just had an epiphany as to why "the world" is "over reacting" to the news. He's a really good sales manager with an insurance background; not investments from the institutional level.

You need investment background to understand that? How do these people get promoted to their senior leadership positions?

More about the extent and amplification. The sr. management teams that came out of investments get it; the guys the came from sales...eh, not so much.

Coworkers husband sold off all his stocks yesterday at a loss of tens of thousands. How mind-bogglingly idiotic.

And to think @stoney has to battle morons like this every single day.

So, most of our stock activity is in (mostly) mutuals with our broker. What would be the fastest, cheapest way for my to turn a chunk of cash I have set aside into stocks right now?
I have never been a day trader or anything...

For simplicity, almost all my accounts are with Fidelity. And their online brokerage service is fine... but @stoney would probably have a better perspective.

They'll all work. Look for low cost. We have money at my company, Vanguard (cheap index funds), and Schwab.
I have no positive things to say about Edward Jones or anybody who tries to sell you American Funds, AIM/Invesco Funds, or whole life insurance. The commissions on those are fucking huge. I was pissed that I just paid $49 for a Vanguard position yesterday, but I just happened to have that money at Schwab where it's not a free trade (vs others). It would have been free if the money was at Vanguard.
