I will buy $1 or 2 of Powerball tickets per year. Expected return is precisely 0 but I am ok with pissing away a few bucks per year in order to daydream for a bit.
I will confess that I do occasionally buy 1 or 2 when it gets high enough for it to be news and/or people at work start talking about it, and if I actually happen to have cash in my wallet. The odds of these things all happening at the same time are only slightly higher than actually hitting the lotto. Were I to hazard a guess, I'd bet my average annual lottery expenditures are in the range of about 10 bucks a year.
