Former Vice President Dick Cheney was recovering Saturday evening after undergoing heart transplant surgery, his office said.

Cheney, 71, was recovering at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Virginia.

He had been on the cardiac transplant list for more than 20 months, a statement from his office said.

"Although the former vice president and his family do not know the identity of the donor, they will be forever grateful for this lifesaving gift," it said.

Cheney has a history of heart trouble, suffering at least five heart attacks since 1978. His first occurred when he was 37.

In June 2010, he was hospitalized at George Washington University for conditions related to his coronary artery disease. He had a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implanted to help his heart pump.

I just feel bad for the person who would have gotten a heart. Instead it gets wasted on a worthless man.

Tbh he could have went to india and probably got it way faster but the anonymity in the donor system really means that it could have come from any source.

Donor family remains anonymous for good reason. Would you admit that your relatives heart, donated out of goodness and because it was the right thing to do, went into that man, who would never in his life perform a similiar act?

Look up the red market book. Donor anonymity means no one can check if organs come from legitimate sources. The urban story about organ harvesting mafias or people getting tricked into donating their organs for as low as 900$ are true. They often end up sick for the rest of their lives after a cheap and fast operation. It just doesn't happen in the US

So maybe instead of thinking about some people's feelings lets think about people who are really hurt here. The same goes for surrogate mothers abroad, egg donors, hell our morals even create same issues with blood donation.

So you feeling good is more important than illegal organ harvesting? Seriously? Let's feel all warm in fuzzy inside where peoples relatives get their internal organs stolen, in case of kidneys living people get ****ed over for them but yaaay we keep it anonymous because we don't like Dick.

That happens and it happens exclusively because of anonymity.

Still not tracking your train of thought...when did I say I felt good about this? The mere fact that this douchenozzle got a transplant makes me sad, because I really feel he is one of the most reprehensible human beings ever produced, and it certainly could have gone to someone more deserving. Who said anything about illegal organ harvesting? Did you lose your spleen after a crazy weekend in Prague or something?

What I don't understand is why they are calling this a transplant.... Doesn't that imply he had a heart to begin with?

Cheney directly oversaw war games on 9/11 that simulating hijackings over the cont US and placed false blips on radar screens, sowing confusion about what was happening. It was the largest war game of this type, ever.

The man is pure evil.

Sorry but the topic kinda rubs me the wrong way. I agree, he's a real ass. I'm not to judge who is more deserving though. I don't feel anyone is qualified to judge that.

Agreed. What really chps my a$$ on this is that the US taxpayer paid for it...something that his party has fought against viciously. And he never really served his country, only his interests and by default those of his party. I sincerely hope he didnt skip a list and bump someone from a life saving translpant through his connections...

he's from poland. well. he could have gone to prague for a crazy weekend, it's not like it's impossible... depending where he actually lives in poland. poland is surprisingly big, when you think about it... so if norbar's from Białystok it would have been a 2000 km roundtrip... even if he's from Gliwice it would be a 900km roundtrip. that's a lot for a weekend trip. maybe he flew? but i doubt he had a crazy weekend in prague. maybe he will some day. or maybe he already has.... i don't know. but after all.... czechia, poland, slovakia, slovenia.... all the same....

I'll agree with that as well. I'd give an organ to George Zimmerman or the Unabomber before a member of the Cheney family got consideration. Hell, even Steve Jobs jumping the line - more deserving.
