no free vibrator day...

The promo was shut down, but not before Justina and Maria Santiago — mom and daughter — scored the sex toys.Trojan began by handing out about 400 free vibrators without incident on Sixth Avenue in Rockefeller Center between 11 a.m. and noon.

i think the issue at hand is it didn't meet the numerous regulations imposed by chairman bloomberg:
- no sizing booth to insure proper fit
- no nutritional information for lubes
- no latex-free options
- obvious "carpal tunnel" issues

are they going to give away the left overs to occupiers? patchouli & cooch-stank ftw

What's the difference between this and common media events/product release crowds/camp outs? NYC better shutdown the Apple stores this fall, can't have people occupying the streets again...

I live in the NYC Metro area, name any other NYC store than has annual local news coverage of consumer madness for the latest fake thrill.

The only thing that would come close is people clawing each others eyes out for BS Black Friday deals at the local Walmart etc (not too many of those in the city)...

what about the kids who camp out for limited run nikes?

they are the ones who need to have fire dropped on them...
Wasn't that because they were the first Jordans sold in years? And it happened almost everywhere?

Does Apple put carts on city sidewalks for commercial reasons without a permit?

It was not apparent yesterday (I know someone who was turned away without explanation). Similar large product/event sales often extend on to city property and impede residents with or without a permit. If the line extends outside of the private property of the store and the crowd is unexpectedly large then the Apple/Nike/Black Friday/whatever should receive equal attention. So the answer is yes, Apple likely violates the same regulation when lines extend on to city sidewalks and the end result is the same with or without the permit.

Couldn't find details about permits, but Apple is well known for being especially good at bending the rules whenever they can - labor, environmental, and taxes (their tax rate is only 40% that of Walmart - 9.8 vs 24%).

When it comes to taxes, they've hosed both your state and the federal government. Besides industry leading marketing, they also pioneered tax cheating schemes:

In the late 1980s, Apple was among the pioneers in creating a tax structure — known as the Double Irish — that allowed the company to move profits into tax havens around the world, said Tim Jenkins, who helped set up the system as an Apple European finance manager until 1994.
