Poll: Some Germans See Good in Nazi Rule

BERLIN (AP) - A quarter of Germans believe there were some positive aspects to Nazi rule, according to a poll published Wednesday _ a finding that comes after a popular talk show host was fired for praising Nazi Germany's attitude toward motherhood.

Pollsters for the Forsa agency, commissioned by the weekly magazine Stern, asked whether National Socialism also had some "good sides (such as) the construction of the highway system, the elimination of unemployment, the low criminality rate (and) the encouragement of the family."

Not that I am taking the sides of the Nazis (and I definately am not), but you can’t really argue that an entire movement/government was totally devoid of good ideas. If they didn’t have any good ideas, it wouldn’t have existed at all. Nor would they have turned Germany around after WWI and the failure of the Weimar Republic. (The Holocaust and the wars of aggression were an assault to the goodness of human kind and those people deserve to rot in hell)

Now, because America has become such a knee-jerk, “don’t-hurt-my-feelings” thin skinned society, I am sure I will be accused of supporting the Nazis and thinking all they did was fantastic. That is not the case. Germans are just a lot more culturally mature than Americans (I live in Germany). They can say things like “Sure, the Nazis did have some good ideas, but they were still sh1theads.” without everyone thinking they ARE a Nazi. Furthermore, from my interactions with my German friends they have a lot more to be upset over about their history than most Americans. And the article was right in that it is still very taboo for Germans to openly discuss the years from 1933-1945.

How do you think we got to the moon?

This article just shows what some Americans will do to criticize other countries. Who cares!! Lets focus more on the problems we have, then worrying about what a poll says about a country in Europe.

Well Marin mate, there are probably some multiple murderers out there who were nice to their mothers too, but mentioning it makes you look like a tool.

I'm not suggesting you're defending the Nazis you pillock, merely stating that it's pointless to say there was anything good about them because the bad was so overwhelming.

The saying goes that if Hitler had died before 1936 he would've been lauded as the savior of Germany.

He did lay much of the groundwork for Germany's post-war success, as difficult as it may be to admit. But then he had to go and yeah...evil bastard.

I wonder how history would have looked back if the Nazis did their eugenic murdering not by race or religion but just killed off the dumb, weak and ugly? Hasselhof certainly wouldn't be as popular over there.

Our country exploited the German scientists, many who were party to the atrocities of slave labor.....our government classified all documents relating to Wernher von Braun and his use of slave labor to build the V2. We hung some people, swept the histories of others under the rug....depended on your value to us.

Years ago we had a tour buss driver in Europe that had driven Hasselhoff on tour in Germany in the early 90's.

He said they had to change the mattress he slept on 3 times because the Hoff would pass out and piss the bed.

He once got out on the highway with a bottle of whiskey in a traffic jam and ran down the shoulder pointing a billboard of himself screaming, "THAT'S ME!!" to all the motorists stuck in traffic.


The tour was at 14,000 seat arenas but they had to curtain off most of the venues because average attendance was about 1000. (or less)

The driver said he was the biggest jackass/asshole he ever dealt with. This coming from a ROCK AND ROLL tour bus driver.

way to go out of your way to defend socialism when the rest of us are talking about, oh, you know, the guys with the square helmets that marched across Czechoslovakia to visit the USSR back in the fourties to pay for their brand of "national socialism".
