10 hours in interviews and I never got the opportunity to even do the test project!

"Thanks for all the time you have spent with us discussing the possibility of full-time employment with ____. We have enjoyed getting to know you-and are impressed with your talent and enthusiasm.

However, as we have been searching, one thing that has become increasingly apparent is that our clients' creative demands are continuing to evolve and expand. For a small company, we're now doing a lot of different things-in both the print and interactive worlds. Our conclusion is that any full-time position we might create would require broader experience than that which you have yet developed. As a result, we are not ready to offer you a full-time position at this time.

At least for the present, and while we continue our search, our intent is to continue using a collection of part-time and/or free-lance creative folks, each with a different set of skills. If working with _____ on that basis sounds appealing, I could see the possibility of funneling some projects your way. If you are interested, just let me know."

Oh I'm interested... and I'll roll that 10+ hours of my wasted time into the invoice too! That comes to $800, thanks.

Why did I have a feeling this would happen? Be glad it turned out this way. If they jerked you around this much in the interview process, imagine how much they'd mess with you if you got hired? Be glad. Be very glad.

Bummer about a prospective job falling through.

I guess I'll be a lone dissenter but I don't understand why you think that you should be reimbursed for going through a lengthy interview process.

Dood, that sucks........that was a load of your time and mental energy wasted on that. I'd be a little miffed if during that whole process they never let on that you may not have all the skills they need.

Seriously, 10 hours... they had what they needed after 3 or 4 (max). That is time I could have spent on other paying projects or maybe with my wife. In actuality I won't charge them anymore than normal rate, though I wont be doing them any favors. I do feel pretty jerked around and well... it was a gratifying thought.

Dude - sorry to hear it. I just lost out to an "internal applicant" after an hour phone interview, a two hour in-person interview, and an online personality test. (you did 10 hours? I would get so stabby after that)

The other person who already worked there swooped in at the last minute and snagged it, they had been in the company 5 years already.

I'm still looking.

Not really... I'm not sure what they want. They have a really great interactive department. Their print depatement is the one that needs help.
Probably what happened was that the VP of sales brought in his super hot neice who is about to graduate from design school, to show her a "real" design studio. After everyone in the office finished undressing her with their eyes, they hired her without even looking at her portfolio.

So?

You chose to go on these interview trips, they had no obligation to hire you and you had no obligation to show up for the interviews.

I certainly would be pissed if I were interviewed for that long and then dropped but I don't think you should feel entitled to reimbursement for it.

That said, bill 'em anyway and if they pay, then it's money in your pocket ;)

I guess you missed this part "In actuality I won't charge them anymore than normal rate, though I wont be doing them any favors. I do feel pretty jerked around and well... it was a gratifying thought.".

No, but I might be misunderstanding. Does the bolded section not mean you will be billing them?

edit: Ah, does that mean if you do freelance projects for them, you won't charge them extra?
