Last month I worked with a local (San Francisco) musician/producer/independent-music-label to create the album art for an upcoming release. I recorded the process out of curiosity and just for fun. The album came out last week and I put together a video of the creation process - here it is:

Details on the album here: http://www.defchild.com

Nice job! I still use Freehand for its ability to automatically do those inlines (and several other reasons) for the neon type.

Thanks sb. I've never used freehand. I should check it out since I'm really not in love with illustrator.

what program do you use for filming your screen? I haven't had much success for one for my Mac.
I used screenflow:

You can try it out indefinitely... but it watermarks any video you output. I was happy to record with it until I had done something worthwhile with it at which point I ponied up the $99. This whole process was done on a trial version, but I paid in the end. Actually, if you use this code, you save $10:

btw, I thought I'd mention I think screenflow is pretty awesome. Perfect for what I needed it to do.

I'm not sure how many layers... photoshop has folder sets (folders of layers) and these other things called "smart layers" that can contain other layers, so it's tough to keep track. They also refuse to add a layer count option for inquisitive minds... so you have to kinda guess.

It looks like I have over a hundred layers... not too bad considering.

Freehand MX is a usefull tool, it has some stuff that it does better than illustrator, in my opinion. But I still only use it as a supplement to illustrator.

I used to do a lot of technical illustration and I got so much faster in FH, that it's been hard to give up.
