The money shot... (kind of gross knee damage)

For those of you who are interested, here is a nice closeup of the hole that was my knee. Not really that devastating, but it made me a little uneasy watching the doctor cut chunks of dirt and rocks out of my muscle and fat for an hour and a half with a scalpel. What a wierd sensation that creates when someone is tugging on you from underneath your skin.

I'm relatively new to this whole idea of getting cuts big enough to need stitches. Ever since I got my V10 this has become more of a ordinary procedure.

Dude, you went to the doctor for that nick?

Next time give me a call, I have a swiss army knife, some rubbing alchohol, a needle, and some fishing line - could fix you up good for the cheap.....

Just kidding man, that looks nasty, I hope it heals up fast so you can get back on the trail soon. We were bummed not to see you at the trail yesterday.

Do what they say with regards NOT BENDING IT.

The knee will rip those stitches right out if you bend it all around.

I had a perpetua-gash that took like 2 months to heal cause I kept opening it up again.

Also, it might seem like a good idea to take the stitches out early yourself... don't.. it will open back up again.

That reminds me when I was about 10 and opened a huge gash in my knee riding a friends ATV that I wasn't allowed to be on. I didn't want my mom to find out so I talked my older sister (13) into fixing it up for me. We didn't have anything to clean it with so she took some of my mom's Bacardi (mmm....rum) and poured it over the gash to clean it up.

Damn that hurt. How stupid of me, it ended up being so bad that a week later I had to go to the doctor for stitches anyway.

that is about what the palm of my hand looks like right now. but luckly the skin on the palm of your hand is really thick and i didn't need stitches. the cut on my hand is about 1/4" deep!! it bleed all over the place. i should of been wearing gloves but i didn't. just goes to teach you to wear the proper protective gear.

hope you get better soon

Now that you've spent probably $4000+ on your V-10 it might be a good idea to invest in a $40 pair of knee pads...
Hrrmmm. You're prolly right. What do you think about the Dainese Freeride KNee/Shin guards? Are they any good?

If you have the money I'd go for the Dainese bibs, they will be less likely to slide down or out of the way while you are riding/crashing.

You can take them out yourself. Just don't do it early.

Last time I had stitches, I swear that the doctor taking them out had parkinsons. He was F'in all over the place. He jabbed me with the tweezers, pulled on the stitches before he cut them... Then he charged me $100 for my troubles.

I KNOW I could have done a better job myself.

Wouldn't that be more than $40? Thus negating your witty/scathing comment made in the previous post?

out yonder, round bout a hootinany
the thing i don't like about pads like the dainese is that they don't give you full coverage. the leave the bottom of your shin exposed and provide nothing for the back of your leg, and i've got a big scar on the back of my leg from a pedal. if you ride clipless, you really only need kneepads. if you ride flats, you'll want shin protection too.

Nice! My leg looks pretty destroyed. Not as bad as many BMMXers I know, but bad enough that I get looks when I sit down wearing shorts and my knee is expossed. I have had people believe that they are shrapnel wounds many times.

Damn! How'd that little critter (DHracer ;) ) manage to get caught in there? BTW, I hope you changed the pads...

I've had several close calls with the rabbits out here, but they always get out of my way in the nick of time...
