Abandoned factories. Foreclosed homes. Crime. Poverty. Unemployment. Endless gridlock.

The richest country in the world has it all in spades.

In some places, you may not notice it too much. Conversely, some cities have taken on more than their fair share of misery.

There are plenty of lists out there like "cities with worst unemployment" or "cities with the highest foreclosures." Those lists, though, are all quantitative. What we're after is something different.

We've gone through and created what we hope is the definitive list of the most depressing places in America.

The average home price in Detroit is just $7,500 because no one wants to live there. The continuing catastrophe that is the US auto industry has reduced this onetime industrial behemoth to a nearly perfect picture of decrepitude.

Last year when the murder rate dropped in the city, the mayor joked that the reason was that "there is no one left to kill."
Awesome.

When the artists start moving in, it's time to get the f*ck OUT!
Artists have been revitalizing many communities nationally for decades. They move in to an abandoned section or an entire town and turn it around through hard work, creativity and persistence. A once desolate, blight urban setting gets transformed into a destination for tourism and eventually draws the wealthy. Property values increase to the point that the artists can no longer afford to live there. Then the community begins to lose the very aspect that drew them there in the first place.

I have personally experienced this progression twice during my career.

Conservatives who bash on artists and treat them as though they have little to no value burn my ass. If there was no art or creativity your life would be unbearably dull. Every aspect of anything you enjoy has been affected in some way by artists.

If Detroit were located in the south I'd be there in a heartbeat to buy a house, but I really don't want to return to a place with a real winter and no winter sports.

Shows what I know... I've always heard that moving in a bunch of unemployed potheads and faggots hurt the property values.

This is undeniably true. For instance, I greatly enjoy berating artists. Id say they're pretty integral to that process.

Some of those a pretty freaking cool!
Big bills to fix them up of course but still cool!

You know you could set up a building/construction training course where they take one of those places and fix it up..... Sell it when done to subsidize the course costs.
Would be a good way for local city councils/school systems to teach unemployed kids out of school a trade and give them a chance at a job while also helping revitalize the area?

Potheads, yes.

Gays, no. Downtown Long Beach has areas with large gay populations that are just wonderful. You can literally move one foot and go from being in the hood to being on the cover of home and garden.
