BTW, Malarchuk made a 100% recovery. IIRC, there was a vascular surgeon sitting rink side who helped out...
he was lucky he was at the end of the rink where the Zamoboni doors were. they were able to get him off the ice pretty quickly and attend to him. If he had been on the other end of the rink - I don't know if he would have survived. It was a "sick to your stomach" experience seeing all that blood on the ice in person. Really scary.

The team trainer stuck his hand inside the would and pinched the vein shut, holding his hand there until they got him off the ice.
The team trainer was a medic in Viet Nam, so he knew how to stop vascular bleeding.
