Inspired by this $150 Linux box:

What is the cheapest you could build a PC with parts ordered online?

You don't have to actually build it, just post up some specs and links.

This is not a contest, just an experiment. I bet the geeks here can break the $100 mark easy.

GO.

Mobo/VGA/CPU, $49.99: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813135060
RAM, $15.99: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820141164
Drive, $34.99: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822210003
DVD/CD, $7.99: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827135151R

I'd go as far as to suggest that a case is an irrelevant expense when doing this, since there are lots of places to score used cases for free. Puts my total at $110 with no bargain hunting. With bargain hunting, you could easily dip below the $100 mark.

What would be far better, though, is something like:

Mobo/CPU/VGA, $79.99: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138100
RAM, $19.99: http://www.frys.com/product/5375608
Burner, $16.99: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827106085
HDD, $38.99: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136195

That puts it right around $155 and you get 2gb of fast DDR2 memory, socket AM2, a burner and a western digital drive. I'd say that's way better than the guys in the article did with their socket 478, 512mb of used memory (used? We could poke around eBay and probably come out with a PC for $75) and a non-burning drive.

That's an awesome little machine. They couldn't quite break the $100 barrier but they've still done a good job.:thumb:

Excellent. That's what I'm talking about.

The case thing, I agree - if you can't scrounge a usable case on Craig's List then you have no business being on the internet.
