If we legalize drugs, I can't see how we could logically continue medical support for addicts at any public expense. If we make it so people can have a free choice, we'd sure as **** better show people the consequences of their actions (death and/or expensive rehab out of their pocket, not on medical insurance) and not sponge off my ****ing tax dollars or insurance premiums to fix their issues.

The Supreme Court used an activist interpretation to justify limiting guns, while using a strict interpretation to disallow banning guns.

Now, reasonable debate usually doesn't include ad hominem attacks, since it is an argument of ideas, not the people saying those arguments.

Edit: MikeD, we don't really know what would happen, since Holland has far less marijuana usage than the U.S, but the culture is completely different.

Don't particularly like public money and insurance going to alcohol treatment, either--but just because the situation with alcohol is jacked up doesn't mean we should do the same with drugs...if anything, it should show us where things have gone wrong.

How much do we spend on rehab compared to how much we spend on the drug war?

Numbers...I bet you come out on the losing end. According to Wipipedia, we spend about $45.5B in 2005. How much did the United States government spend on overseeing alcohol distribution and treatment of addicts?

Not to mention the fourth amendment costs...

I think it's pretty fair to say that the point you are arguing is impossible to nail down.

Right now, drugs are illegal. How many people that stops from partaking is difficult to determine and how much drug use would increase if they could be obtained legally is impossible to determine.

I don't think it's an invalid point at all. I would tend to lean towards the low end when speculating about how much drug use would increase, but I don't know any more than you do. I think marijuana is a slightly different issue and shouldn't really be lumped into this.

I dunno mike. Your logic suggests that we shouldn't treat cardiovascular diseases at public expense. After all, they eat the cheeseburgers, or smoke the dope...they should pay... right?

Besides, cardiovascular diseases kill (let alone hospitalize) tons more people anyway.
