Boston....outside of it....
how it is art:
transforms the environment
people, wind, snow, rain change the work...therefore it is always being transformed
lots of planning

It's interesting, but I don't think that this is something that I would consider a great piece.
I also 'understand' Jackson Pollock's work, but that doesn't mean that I like it.

I figure that stuff is usually modern art when somebody asks: Why is this art?
and then there is a discussion as to what is art, and what is not, usually with someone interjecting that their dog just made a poo on the front lawn so their dog is now considered an artist?

There is no need for discussion (whether it is art) for classic art. It is readily identifiable because of the construction of the piece (painting, sculpture).

If thats correct it was a waste of $$
Christo paid for it out of his pocket.... If he wants to spend his $$ that way. Then let him. I think it is cool. Paid for a lot of Artists in NY to actually make money while they are alive.....jdcamb

Was that pile of dung NEA funded?
No, it was not.

It was apparently funded entirely by the artists themselves.
Christo is a Republican ?

"Who pays for the installations?

Christo & Jeanne-Claude pay the entire cost of the artworks themselves. They earn all of the money through the sale of the preparatory studies, early works from the 50s and 60s and original lithographs on other subjects.

They do not accept grants or sponsorships of any kind. They do not accept donated labor (volunteer help). They do not accept money for things like posters, postcards, books, films, T-shirt and mugs or any other products at all. None."
