Economy zips ahead at a 5.6 percent pace
By JEANNINE AVERSA, AP Economics Writer

The economy sprang out of a year-end rut and zipped ahead in the opening quarter of this year at a 5.6 percent pace, the fastest in 2 1/2 years and even stronger than previously thought.

The new snapshot of gross domestic product for the January-to-March period exceeded the 5.3 percent growth rate estimated a month ago, the Commerce Department reported Thursday. The upgraded reading — based on more complete information — matched economists' forecasts.

The stronger GDP figure mostly reflected an improvement in the country's trade deficit, which was much less of a drag than previously estimated.

Gross domestic product measures the value of all goods and services produced within the United States and is considered the best barometer of the country's economic fitness.

Well, 5.6% would be good if all of that didnt come from weapons we sold to Iraq in the 80s.

Hey N8....you forgot to cut and paste this part of the article:

Fresher barometers, however, suggest the economy is shifting into a lower gear in the current quarter.

In a separate report, the Labor Department said that new claims filed for unemployment benefits last week rose by 4,000 to 313,000 -- a bit more than economists were expecting.

Economists predict that economic growth in the April-to-June quarter probably slowed to a pace of around 2.5 percent to 3 percent. High energy prices and a more moderate housing market will play roles in the expected slowdown in overall economic activity.

Start "good news is really bad news" posts below. Thank you.

While the growth rate was good the economy still does not have a solid footing. There are many issues that can cause a slow down if we are not careful. The reality is that the uncertainty in the Middle East, along with high oil prices and the huge trade deficit, have the markets very nervous. The Feds need to be careful on how much they raise interest rates or we will end up with stagflation.

Economy is chugging along just great, possibly even too fast. Sounds like a perfect time to increase taxes to fight inflation and balance the budget.

Barometers, scharometers!!! These things often mean nothing. What's tangible is what is happening NOW.

Between 1980 and 2004 America's GDP went up by almost two-thirds. But instead of making everyone better off, it has made only a part of the country wealthier, as another part slips ever more into the black hole of the working poor. There are now 37 million Americans living in poverty, and at 12.7 percent of the population, it is the highest percentage in the developed world.
Unless you're a member of that envied top 10%, why do you care?
