In a van.... down by the river
This could probably go any number of places, but below is a copy of a text from a group chat. Dude went hard right after COVID and frankly I find the following...... disturbing to say the least. This is a dude I thought I knew pretty well.

"After a few days of 300% trips I finally have some time off. I've been reflecting on the comments of ALL my lefty friends from around the country trying to wrap my mind around their resistance to future prosperity. Our nation has gotten so far down the bad path we've just normalized it. The political government corruption was far worse than anyone thought. From local to National levels, politicians motivation to take office was driven not but how much they could HELP their constituents but rather by how much their constituents could line their pockets. You could become a millionaire on a salary of $200k annually if you invested correctly over the course of 20 -25 years, not a multi-millionaire in less than half the time. I wake up every morning feeling excited that America is headed towards a more prosperous future. By deporting illegal citizens and lowering the National debt by eliminating the enormous amount of wasteful government spending we can lower the unemployment rate and inflation and make housing more affordable for the kids about to enter the labor market. I've raised three kids and I know from experience that HUMANS are like water, they inherently flow towards the path of least resistance. But that's not always what's best. As a child I thought the democratic way made sense. As an adult I can see that some people just can't be trusted to make the right decision because often that's the easy one not the best one. Greatness comes from sacrifice and discipline, two qualities some people (Republicans and Democrats) just don't posses. After decades of trying the democratic way it's time to rid the country of career politicians and try something different. So yes, ripping a bandaid off hurts but it's better than a slow pull or no pull at all. The media bias is stronger than ever now, even more than before the election which is weird because the election is over, no need to try to sway votes anymore. If their goal is to divide they are doing a masterful job. If the government wants to share the savings of wasteful spending with all its citizens but 1/3 of them are resistant and rebellious maybe just don't share it with them? If Americas can't support their elected leadership maybe it's time for another civil war? Rip the bandaid off so we can end it sooner than later and move on towards greener pastures. When surgeons perform their craft it usually isn't very pretty in there but the finished product is great. Rainbows are beautiful and they usually come after a storm . . . . . ."

I have no idea where I am
I had a friend whom I've know since the early 90s when the local mtb scene was just getting started. A few years ago he started sending me blatantly racist and homophobic texts. I tried to not encourage him by simply ignoring them thinking he would take the hint. A quick look at his Facebook revealed that the group of kayakers he had been paddling with were hardcore right wingers. He even told me a couple of times that his wife told him he was racist. Of course he didn't believe her. The last text he sent right before I left for my '24 hike was, "I'm not a racist, but I fucking hate Indians". Haven't responded. It got to the point that I hadn't ridden with him or seen him in person otherwise for a few years and the relationship had become nothing more that a source of negativity emanating from a small electronic devise that I carry in my pocket. Now he wants to be fiends on FB.

I have a couple of similar stories. I’ll spare everyone the details but there are about 4 or 5 people in my friend group that immediately pop to mind. One hasn’t contacted me in years after our last/final disagreement. One was off the radar and recently tried to reconnect. Two or three others are still in semi regular though infrequent contact and we tend to avoid political discussions, though I’ve figured out where they stand.

The conversation with the pilot in question went on for a little bit, and the dude definitely got worse. And I do mean worse beyond calling for totalitarianism and open violence. Definitely done talking to that guy.

I've witnessed similar changes to friends who "got religion" after getting married and having kids.

I keep seeing these stickers around town and asked a church going neighbor about them. He told me that there are most definitely churches that push a pro-white agenda and are openly racist. Not sure about this one but I am suspicious.
