You know - I've been through your situation before and I've found (every time) that it's cheaper to buy a complete donor bike and sell off the things you don't want (e.g. frame or brakes etc) and replace.

blah!
chain, cassett, derailer[sp?], grips, seat post clamp, head set, stem, shifters, bb, chain guide, and that should be it. You have to rember all the little stuf, because if you dont it will come back to bite you in the ass when you have the bike almost together and cant ride it because of one little stupid part.

Little things you will need:
- Chain lube
- Grease
- Shifter cable(s)
- Shifter cable housing
- Ferrules for the end of all the cable lengths
- The little metal doohickeys that clamp on the end of the shifter cables, to keep 'em from unraveling
- Either a star nut or a headset clamp of some type
- A quick release for your rear wheel if you need one. Some wheelsets don't come with one.

If you build it yourself, make sure you have the right tools. There's nothing worse than destroying a new part because you tried to hack it on using makeshift tools.

By correct tools, I mean things like, buy a cable housing cutter, don't try and hack it with diagonal cutters or something (like most people do). It's an inexpensive tool and there is simply no good substitute for snipping cable housing. Have a decent set of allen wrenches, stripping out brand new bolts because you used your cheap Wal-Mart set is no fun. That kind of thing.

I watched a guy at a local bike shop a couple months ago trying to install a bottom bracket using a flat bladed screwdriver and a hammer :disgust1:
