This is a pretty intersting article/video about Tim James who is running for governer of alabama. He wants to change the driver's license exams to englist only, its currently offered in 12 languages.

I do agree with him, but can see how it can lead to some problems.
Hope he wins.

I hope the test requires proper spelling and grammar.

If you agree, then please explain why the test should not be given in different languages ?
Simple answer: Traffic signs in the US are not in foreign language. Signs provide direction and law. If you can not read english, how can you effectively and quickly understand direction written in English on those signs?

The vast majority of the signs are deliberately designed to be distinct shapes and colors and not rely on reading text rapidly. The average English-speaking (nominally) Joe Sixpack is near illiterate anyways so this is a good thing.

We just passed similar legislation in GA. Kinda ironic how nationwide we're leaning towards amnesty for illegal immigrants but individual states are making Jim Crow laws against them.

While I like the idea, it just bites everyone in the a** in the end. If you make the test available in English only there are many people who won't/can't take the test. Instead of getting a license, and buying insurance, you now have someone driving without a license and uninsured. Just because someone can't get a license doesn't mean they're not going to drive. More uninsured motorists raises all of our rates, and it sucks if you get into an accident with one.

Dunno, I'd probably have quite a bit of trouble with this if it were written in French...

I support this in concept...but in reality, it will never work. What is wrong with a national language being declared? Other countries do it, why not us?

"Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free..."

Unless you are Native American, your ancestors came from somewhere else.

I'd just like to see a US based drivers test based on actual driving skills. It is harder to get a ****ing marriage or dog license in this country.

Got one half blind eye, a five second reaction time and as much situational awareness as algae and there is no problem with you getting behind a 5K lb ramrod.

And? When they arrived here, many of them assimilated as quickly as possible. If they want to speak their native tongue, go right ahead, teach me too. But when they need essential services and expect the agency to give special dispensation because they dont habla Englais, there is a problem, and it is not with the English speakers. If you want to retain your native tongue, go ahead. But when you want to live here, and reap(?) the benefits of same, show a little effort fercryinoutloud.

If someone rolls into your shop, speaking only Mandarin Chinese, how are you going to deal with him/her?

And btw, I am Native American...and ScotchDutchIrish...and I speak 'merkan, German (well), Spanish (Enough to get by.) and some French and Italian (Mostly from traveling there...eating, trying to pick up girls etc) (And playing hockey w/ French Canadian kids, learning how to pick fights and insult the Quebecois...)

That is a very good point, I had not thought of that......

The best things about this thread is that BikerBoy28 made 4 spelling errors in his original post (2 of them phonetic) and then blamed it on the keyboard.

Gotta love Ridemonkey.

I just watched the "Ad" ... fcuk I hate this kind of politics... typical pandering to Bubba.

The stupid wave continues. I consider it to be a personal deficit that I only speak one language.
This.

Bunch of Mexican-hatin' rednecks wanting to change their driving test. That's all that is.

I like the thread title btw...I picture some backwoods imbred motherfvcker telling me that while I'm paddling a canoe down the bayou.

English isn't spoken in Alabama, only an "English type language". Kinda like expecting to get real crab meat in crab rangoons; when in reality its only a "crab substance"

I wouldn't refer to is so much as English, they speak what I refer to as "Merkin."

Also, yes this is just stupid. Anyone who knows second generation immigrants knows that the kids pick up American culture very quickly. Nobody wants to be a 3rd world goat milker or whatever. Let's send pictures of our winkys to each other with our cell phones!

so i guess we should stop importing immigrants

there's a place at K & 5th st NW where you can get that. it's not so bad if you don't mind the hissing cockroach sound she makes w/ her train whistle
Even if you are Native American, they came from somewhere else. (that whole land bridge thing)

By the way, my wife would like to point out that you still suck at spelling and grammar. How about learning English yourself before insisting that others do?
